| A work colleague retired today , at the age of 60 and after 24 years of continual service. Whilst a genius in her field, she is quiet and unassuming, a beige kind of lady who, I think most of us assumed, would never dream of taking a chance. How very wrong we were! Tomorrow, after only one month of planning, she's moving lock stock and blessed barrel to Fife! She has no family and no friends there; she once enjoyed a holiday in the area many years ago and vowed to return. [more...] | ||

| I was reminded today of the wonderful attribute of human compassion. A friend who lost her mum some months ago has remained in contact with the consultant surgeon (Mr H) who had become very close to her mum during and after several operations that were considered 'pioneering' at the time. Mr H is Jamaican and was holidaying there last week and visiting his mum on Sunday for Jamaica's Mother's Day. He took time out of his special day with his mum to call my friend to tell her he was thinking of her and her family and asked how everyone was. | During a tour of the London Dungeon yesterday, there was a Q&A session where the tour guide held up various implements of torture used in the 12th century and asked the group to name them. I volunteered three answers, all of which were correct. The tour guide was delighted that someone was playing ball and finally asked if I was a "professional torturer". I smiled sweetly and thought "If only she knew". | ||
