| Another excellent book melding economic perspective with human behaviour. Much like The Winner-Take-All Society and The Economic Naturalist, it's becoming obvious that those who're able to blend economic rigour with a lack of formalism are some of the most valuable observers of the modern world. | It's not the end of days, but it's certainly the end of something, maybe the end of several decades of escalating abundance for the winners of the winner-take-all global society. We've never had it so good, and we can't keep having it so good. Are we witnessing the end of the human race? Pffft, not more than usual, that perennial decree of society's fabric being torn asunder. Keep your Armageddon fetish to yourself. But we are on the brink of witnessing the death of abundance. We've added a billion people to the population in about the time it takes for a newborn to become a teenager, and yet priorities [more...] | ||

| So, I finally got around to watching some Mad Men, successfully made it to the end of the first series without any sick on my shoes. It's alright! Measured, luxurious attention to detail (which makes the product placement all the more glaring), solid performances, doesn't loiter too long on any of its facets. That last point was especially impressive, given how restrained they were about the Nixon vs Kennedy stuff, which was basically the first episode of the original Star Wars of US politics, and that. So, yeah, alright! [more...] | ||

| It's gotten so hard to greet dudes for the first time. Time was, it was 100% handshake, no messing, iron eye contact, all done. Nowadays, I dunno what's going to happen when a new dude rocks up in front of me, and starts moving his hand in my direction. [more...] | ||

| I've got this new shampoo, the adverts said it would make my penis look bigger. Only kidding, I got it from the pound shop. It's one of those entertainingly brazen rip-offs, like instead of being called Head 'n' Shoulders, it's called Herd 'n' Showdogs or Hard 'n' Shoulder. [more...] | ||

| So, I've been watching telly lately! And not just, like, telly programs, I mean linear tv, the act of slouching in front of a magic hole that fires constant streams of manicured humanity into my gawping face. I only think it's noteworthy because I've not done it for yeeeears. Last time I proper watched TV, the 'internet' was just a little block of bleeping wood in AOL's garden shed. [more...] | ||

| I've been trying to make friends with celery, because, well, foods that stick around have a habit of having some worthwhile qualities. The opposite of modern celebrity. Poor celery, it's one of those boring diet foods for sadsacks and fanatics, never gets invited to parties or snuggled up next to a heart-kicking kebab. [more...] | ||

| "Someone asks you for money, you shouldn't give it. Whatever sob story they trot out, you're probably not going to make much of a difference; the problems go much futher than a quick donation of small change. It's the entire system that's failed, delivered these people to the boneyard, dropped them through the cracks. Besides, I'm just one man, I can't solve the problems of many. I give to one, another will be along in a minute, different sob story, same request - where does it end?" [more...] | ||

| Something's not right. Everyday, we're bombarded with spikes of shrill hostility, a death by a thousand jump-cuts. Virtually every media outlet continuously pumping infinite tales of violence, tragedy, injustice, incompetence and disaster in a variety of rabid tones. An all-you-can-bleat buffet of fear generation and validation, battering our natural capacities for concern and curiosity into slack-jawed submission, jacknifing from the macro to micro, from things beyond our control (OMG MEGAPAEDO TERRORISTS RAINING FROM THE SKY) to things mooted to be within our control but beyond our acuity (OMG [more...] | ||

| (actually, feel a bit harsh stabbing Beauty And The Geek the way I did. I love it, really. And all of its contestants, by the time the show ends. Which kinda underscores the point regarding excessively front-loaded definitions of what people are about. While shows like these are riven with all kinds of ominous tones, plenty of them are based on polite rivalry rather than constant antagonism. Beauty And The Geek is a massive hugathon, garish and telegraphed, sure, but a cuddly meeting-in-the-middle all the same. Awwww) | ||

| I hate having my photo taken. Cameras don't steal my soul, but they definitely steal whatever fragile self-sense of cool I get away with when I've forgotten how I look. Plus, I always pull *that* face, y'know? Where you try to be wacky, but just end up looking weird in the most boring manner imaginable, because your brain's gotten a bit confused about this brand new emotion (LOOK COOL SOMEHOW) you've just demanded of it. Asymmetrical smile. Showboat the double-chin. Deflate biceps. Set eyebrows to 'constipated'. And so on. Just remember to forget that other people never see you the same way you [more...] | ||
