The Interview

She picked up the letter from the pile that had dropped through her letterbox onto her hall floor. The usual mix of bills and junk mail but as she shuffled through the stack of letters her heart took a little leap as she came across a stiff white DL envelope bearing her name and address. There were no other markings apart from the stamp and a smudged postmark so she knew this was more likely to be the reply she was waiting for rather than the another bill or junk.

Outnumbered

Tonight two episodes of Outnumbered. My daughter bought me the DVD as a present. We have a video projector and whilst I do not watch much TV, it's a family tradition that some evenings we watch a movie or an episode all cinema stylie, lights out and curled up on the sofa.

Madcap Ideas - Narrowboat Dwelling

Bear with me, I'm streaming with hay-fever and a cold. I hate summertime colds, if you have to have colds, much better in the winter. Anyway, I mention this by way of excusing this madcap stream of consciousness/steaming eyes/streaming nose blogging.

The Muse....

The muse is the transformer of the soul. She takes a man out of complacent contentment into the conflict of creativity. Through her existence, experience is magnified. What was once unremarkable is turned and wrought into something worth fighting for.

The Illegitimate Son of a Barmaid

No, not I. But that turn of phrase turned up at the dinner table last night. Something about it just captured my imagination. "The illegitimate son of a barmaid". Now that really is something to put on your headstone. Six words and I'm hooked and want to read more. Powerfully, descriptively painting a colourful picture with nothing more flowery than the vernacular of the common man, or even the illegitimate son of a barmaid.

It's Not Just Chemistry, It's...

When I was nine, my father bought me a Chemistry set. For some time it lay in the drawer beneath my bed. Eventually a Saturday morning came when my father found time to spend with me and we ceremoniously brought out the chemistry set and set it down on the kitchen table. The little spirit burner was filled with methylated spirit (I can still see that vivid purple fluid and smell that distinctive smell). Salts were added to a test-tube of water and were carefully warmed over that small yellow flame. Magically, beautiful crystals started to appear.

Last week I took my son back to university. It's the same university where I met his mum thirty years ago. My son is having as gloriously happy and fulfilling a time down in Canterbury as we had had.
