25 May 12Happy Towel Day to all you Hoopy Froods (7) by MrMan67 (27 May 12, 3:41 AM by Empress_Martine)
"A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. .... any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is is clearly a man to be reckoned with."
23 May 12Backing up old PCs? (4) by DancesWithPussycats (27 May 12, 12:11 AM by DancesWithPussycats)
Calling on the collective IT wisdom of IC. I have some old PCs (486DX, 8086) that I haven't used for years and want to scrap, but they still have stuff on them I'd like to keep. Is there any easy way to download them onto a modern PC or laptop? I think they are pretty much limited to serial and parallel ports and floppy drives (3.5 and 5.25 depending in the machine) for data in and out, but it will be a real pain in the arse to download them using floppy discs. Is there anything that will let me download them to a USB portable drive, or any other sneaky way to do it?

14 Apr 12What graphic novel are you reading at the moment? (16) by Empress_Martine (14 May 12, 2:15 PM by s1aveguy)
If you do not know what a graphic novel is then its one step beyond a comic, its illustrated and has a narative line and usual the story is very dark.At the moment I am reading Violent Cases by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean. Many of these novels become films etc like the Watchmen and V for Vendetta, both on DVD,and I have both of them but started life as graphic novels. Both novels created from the hand of the brillient Alan Moore. So what graphic novel are you reading?

22 Mar 12Why modern life has corroded my soul... (16) by Sorceror (3 Apr 12, 3:58 PM by Empress_Martine)
The news from France today. After (allegedly) gunning down three soldiers, a teacher and three Jewish children, and a number of police officers during an armed siege the suspect made an attempt to escape by leaping, guns blazing, from a window. Apparently he was dead before he hit the ground, killed by a head shot from a French police officer. And for some reason my only emotional reaction to this complex tragedy was "God, I bet he's fucking awesome at Call of Duty". Someone please pray for my soul... [more...]
