I went in the garden this morning to have a quiet read before I started gardening and spotted a sparrow in a flower bed. I went over to check it was OK and instead of flying away it just sat there - which usually means a bird is hurt or ill. I've been reading up on these things.  I picked it up to see if it was injured and saw a clump of matted feathers on the top of its head. I put it back on the ground and got my bird book which has lots of information on diagnoses and first aid. [more...]

| And before I get the wrong kind of replies... I'm talking about one with feathers. I've identified it as a swift by its white throat, the shape of the wings and tail, and the fact that all four toes on each foot face forward. It's plumage is brown except for the throat which makes me think it's a young bird. [more...]

| Friendship is a wonderful thing. Friends accept you for who you are. They may not understand all the parts that make you 'you' - they may disagree strongly with one or more of the parts - but a real friend will set that aside because they care. Even in a very close friendship there will be a certain amount of give and take. This is even more important when friends are in the scene. | ... on the bus on the way home. No it's nothing to do with my purloined bird table. I got a new book in Past Times and it's hilarious. Whilst I'm not a wrinkly myself - according to Michelle Pfeiffer '50 is the new 30' - but I meet a lot of wrinklies. The book is called "Wrinklies Joke Book" and when I started reading it the humour started me laughing... and laughing... and laughing. Here's a sample... [more...]

| People amaze me sometimes. I went out this morning and as I walked down the path I thought 'There's something different about the garden' but I was in a rush so I didn't pay that much attention. It wasn't till I got home that I realised that someone had stolen my free standing wooden bird table which cost over £30 and was quite heavy. | I went to Sainsbury's today and bought a new bottle of their rather yummy cream liqueur as a little treat as I haven't had any for ages. Tonight I was going to have a small glass of it. I tried to unscrew the cap which I can usually do. It wouldn't budge. After several minutes of fruitless effort I went into the kitchen and got the thingamajig for unscrewing stubborn bottle tops. Normally one twist with that and the cap capitulates. Did this one? Did it eckerslike! I held the gizmo so tightly there are score marks round the bottle top. Score - bottle 1, Iona nil. | Yes I know Cosmic is always animated but today I saw 'him' animated in a completely different way. I saw the animated film Bolt at the cinema - great fun and with a lot of heart - and the character of the director really reminded me of Cosmic. [more...]

I had a laugh when I got to work tonight. I was slightly late (not my fault, I had to wait for my lift to arrive ) and the hall was still full (OK there were about half a dozen or so) of small boys playing football. Having ascertained the situation I strode confidently into the hall and in a commanding voice ordered them out. One of the men who was in charge of them said he liked strong women. I said "You have no idea!"  He also said that he'd take up dancing if I was the teacher. If I didn't already have Simone I might have had a ready made sub. | ||

| We all have them - if you don't please let me know your secret. I spent three quarters of an hour on an unheated bus today and later on had to wait over half an hour for a bus. I was tired and inclined to mutter about things when I got in. But with me it's temporary - I have my say and get over it. Sometimes other people have off days with me and have a go at me or mine but a friend is still a friend even if they don't always know it themselves. | I've thought for weeks that Lisa should go, then tonight she and Brendan put on such a wonderful performance I didn't know who to vote for. When they were announcing the results I was almost as tense as the dancers themselves. When they said that all three couples would be going through I got all choked and a bit weepy - and this is just the semi finals! Heaven knows what I'm going to be like next week! | ||

| I wouldn't normally blog about this but I feel so foul I thought it was worth mentioning. Others have blogged about this - now it's my turn. I've got a stuffy nose, I'm coughing, I've got a dodgy throat, the beginnings of a headache, and I may be losing my voice. If I was with my kitty I'd be in bed and waited on hand and foot but sadly that's not possible. I had to get up to do some online food shopping and after that I may creep back into bed. [more...]
