http://ds-arts.com/RopeArt/hempropefinishing_ang... Is pretty good. The bit that they all miss out is that once you have boiled the buggery out of it, dried it under tension, de-scratchybitted it (don't use a candle - too sooty!), the best way to make a nice bit of rope nicer is to use it! Some even recommend wacking a concrete floor with it as the quick way to get that lovely 'well used' feel. Never seen what was wrong with doing it the fun way, myself.

Hi Mon Sherrie Hope the following is of use: First, the hemp is boiled and carefully dried. Then the tough rope is broken, and stray strands are singed. Finally, Bayu oil is worked into the fibers. * a Using a mild detergent Wash off if you plan to dye the rope), wash rope Lengths in a washing machine using the hot water cycle. 1. Dry in a Clothes / Tumble dryer. Coil 1-2 rope into a lingerie bag. This prevents the rope from excessive tangles and been caught and damaged inside the Clothes dryer. Use lingerie bags with large mesh holes in them for more even drying. 2. Ensure that the rope is dried well. This may take 1-2 drying cycles, but the dryer the rope is the more liquid it will absorb. 3. NOTE: that the rope will be quite soft and fuzzy after these first steps. # Dye rope (If you plan to dye the rope, it must be done before adding any oil products) Follow the steps the Dying section # Infuse the oil by boiling the rope in a pressure cooker. 1. Lightly oil the rope by adding a very small amount of oil to rag and drawing the rope through it. 2. Coil the rope up and submerge in water. 3. Pressure-cook the rope for 1 hour at 10psi. 4. The benefits of using a pressure cooker are: 1. Keeps odour to a minimum. 2. Decreases cooking time. 3. Evenly infuses the oil right into the rope core. 4. Ensure the bottom spacer is used in the pressure cooker to prevent the rope from excessive heat damage. # When cooled, carefully drain the pressure cooker. The rope will be quite stiff. # Burn / Singe the fuzzy bits off the rope. Use a gas stove or a butane gas blowtorch; rub the rope along the tynes of the stove or the end of the blowtorch. You can be quite brutal in singing the rope without actually damaging the rope. # Rub the burnt stubble off the rope by drawing the rope through a towel. (Some people say to use canvas or leather, but a towel is fine.) # Repeat steps 3 to 6 another 2 times. This is where time is important, the more times you repeat the process, the better the rope gets. # Final step: # Lightly oil the rope by adding a very small amount of oil to rag and drawing the rope through it. # Let the rope hang overnight. # Put in Clothes dryer to cure the oil into the rope. # Cut rope to length. Remember the rope will shrink and widen during the finishing process, but will regain its full length and narrow after the rope is used a couple of times.

Bloody hell. I'd prefer just to buy something that's fit for purpose when it comes out of the packaging. Why do people use this stuff again?

because it feels so nice... hmmm hemp... *giggle* some people don't like it, others think it's fab, I like a mixture of hemp and synthetic, depending on what we are doing... maybe it's just me with a dirty mind then....

Why bother treating it? In it's natural state it's lovely and rough and scratchy and yummy. I recently had some rope bondage worked on me with a lovely rough length of hemp - it was a most intense session - fabulous. I know sometimes the smooth silky ropes are nice, but sometimes you just want it rough

Quite agree! Usually keep the scratchies on a portion of every batch we do. Some is scratchier than the other, mind, and they do wear off, which is another way of saying watch out for getting a load of bits in yer bed. With a nice scratchey rope you don't have to tie tight to imobilise - is fun to do as well as be in. Got converted to hemp (though still use all sorts) because of the way you can vary the feel of it with little changes in tension, from a silky carress to turning it to steel. That and because of the way it bites to itself, makes it great to tie. And the smell, and the look of it too. (wanders off to chew on some rope.....).

Variety is GOOD! :D hehehhee! I'm not au fait with the treatments thingy. I just stuck my jute in the washing machine. Came out luffly, but then it was beautifully made in the first place. Stick it in the washing machine! Frivolous advice - hell yeah! :D *am still high from the weekend....*
