I have just emailed the Managing Director of Time Out about this post and have requested that he keeps me informed as to his actions.

It will be interesting to see what happens in certain peoples offices as of Monday morning, I hope there are lots of desk fans around to catch some of the flack.

Have fun,

David

Well of course as well as writing to the right people (and i leave that to those who can speak authorititively (i'm sure i've too many tits) on the subject) what we can all do of course is support the event(s).

Then TO's art critic will just look silly for not reviewing a major art event.

So, let's make it a success.

Aren't there any other listings magazines in London, what about sending it to them? Any rivals to Time Out?

Forgive my ignorance, but doesn't Sarah's response reflect exactly the current vanilla view of bdsm?
That is as maybe, but as a professional, her extremly unprofessional answer is more worthy of an uneducated 15 year old than a professional journalist, know are after all, known for their skill with languages.

Can't find an email for Brian Sewell. The only people at the Standard with emails are the Ad sales team, but I used the same format and emailed Brian Sewell, i.e. Brian.Sewell@standard.co.uk. Hope I guessed right.

I'll try that. I've done Feminists Against Censorship. Most newspapers don't seem to give email addresses :-(

I would be happy to; I think the response was appalling.

Me too.

bigoted? fine. To be expected, to some extent. But what got me was the cultural ignorance and unprofessional tone.

Absolutely. If I am sending a letter or response from the agency I work for, I ensure its in line with the ethos of the organisation. The tone alone of her reply would not be acceptable if written on behalf of my agency.

The way she gave such short shrift to the request was so dismissive! It made her sound petulant and arrogant.

The historical and cultural ignorance she displayed was astonishing. The journalists I know check their facts and have enquiring minds.

But she ain't a journo.... she is a self-proclaimed feminist artist.

I would say that if we wanted publicity, she is a gift....because if you prod even lightly, she will come out fighting, quite happy to garner a few headlines for her corner. Basically, she would see articles about this episode as scoring points for HER team: and we would see any publicity as scoring for OUR team.

So a good target to pursue.

Regards,

M

But surely when she is writing for the magazine she is operating as a journalist in that context? Criticism is a branch of journalism.

Does anyone really take anything in Time Out seriously, though?

I think I got it about three times during 16 years in London, and always found it inferior as a listings mag to Exchange & Mart (or the Dagenham Post, come to that!) so I'd certainly never pay the reviews much heed.

He's just a ball of attitude and opinion........
