I recently had the most delicious apple crumble, the topping was made with Shortbread crumbs. The apples lovely and soft.
I really think that the topping made it so nice. It was a great substitute to chocolate.
This has made me wonder what is the best combination of apples and topping can be used to make the best apple crumble. (is there a specific kind of apple to compliment the shortbread crumb topping?)
Will need to do some experimenting.... any volunteers to try this.

Add a handful of fruit and nut muesli to the shortie topping for added zing and crunch. Aromatic Russet is a lovely apple, or Worcester Pearmain or, if you prefer a green apple and want to be patriotic, try Tower of Glamis. My Auntie Helen always added a pinch of cinnamon to her shortie and added cloves and sultanas to the apples in her pies and crumbles - just a couple of each per apple. Drats, I'm hungry again now... xxx Jade Be excellent to each other |

try oats, ginger powder or cinnamon and brown sugar mixed in with usual crumble topping - goes well on rhubarb too and serve with lashings of thick double cream xx |
