We watched "The Cell" on TV last night, as I'd recognised the title from a recent thread on here about films with bdsm in them.
It was a powerful thriller with some interesting surreal sequences. But as seems to be the case so often in films, the bdsm content was tainted yet again by association with the deranged mind of a killer.
For this reason, it left me with a nasty aftertaste. I think such films should be introduced with something like the following warning: "This film contains scenes of pseudo-sadomasochistic violence that some bdsm-ers may find disturbing"
Will we ever get to see a more realistic and positive portrayal of what we do in mainstream cinema? Without either the tittering, trivialising caricature of films like "The Secretary", (which I admit I otherwise enjoyed), or the offensive demonising of "The Cell" and its ilk?
I hope so.
