i once tried to tell my mum i had tattoos. now she was irish of a certain generation, so tattoos were not some sort of body art but a sign that the owner of them was of a bad lot. well coming up to my birthday many years ago she asked what i wanted. as we were walking to the shops i noticed that a new tattoo place had opened up in the parade of shops my mum used to shop at (oddly the location they were in used to be a great newsagents that had some ace comics and some ace porn so as a spotty youth i would go in there and spend hours looking at the comics while gazing at the porn..... strangely both habits are still with me... but i digress.) so i say "you can get me a tattoo". "if god had wanted you to have a tattoo you would have been born with pictures on...." this didn't seem to be the best time to tell i had 4. sometime after this i was visiting her. as was my wont once she had gone to bed i would have a bath and watch some tv in the front room. this always meant i would nod off in front of the fire. which i did. only to be woken up by my mum's voice calling out "are you still awake". i was now half awake at hearing that voice and knowing the next thing to happen would be a visit into the front room from my mum (well it was her flat after all). well as i had a bath before falling asleep on the floor (a habit i still have) i was naked as the day i was born (albeit somewhat cleaner) so what to do - hide my bits or hide my tats? it was a carry on moment. i think i was saved by the fact she didn't have her glasses on when she entered the front room. i never knew if she realised i had tats. but she never asked why i always wore long sleeve shirts when i visited her. | |||
