take a leaf from Robin Williams when he played the DJ Adrian Cronauer in "Good Morning Vietnam" play what the listener wants to hear and if you must butt in keep it short and funny.

How about picking a particular genre of music and exploring how it has progressed. ie. hip hop/rap - Public Enemy/NWA through to Eminem or Punk - Sex Pistols through to Green Day....that might make an interesting show. Is coming Kinklusive be part of it!!!

Hiya If it's a pilot show then you can pretty much do what you want, there are a few basics that you might want to try and stick to 1) Don't crash the tracks (crash is when you talk over the music), it's the most annoying thing that a DJ can do 2) Always tell the listener what the track is (either upfront or if you forget then back announce it) 3) Talk to the audience as though you are talking to one person and not a whole lot of listeners 4) Try to think how you can link the tracks to what you are actually talking about as you are getting ready to play them. 5) If you ask any questions make sure you give the answers 6) Avoid (as much as possible) direct audience participation via the telephone, if it's a pilot show then you don't want to look silly waiting for phone calls if none are coming. Yes I know that there are always some people who will ring the local radio station regardless but these people are idiots and won't give you quality calls, you will only get that once you have an established show and an established format. 7) Speak slowly and clearly, if you make a mistake don't be afraid to admit it, do it in a jocular way and almost laugh it off Depending on when your show is going out try and think of something topical, perhaps a look back at Christmas No 1's, or One Hit Wonders (House of Pain, Chesney Hawkes), or the impact of novelty records, or manufactured bands versus bands that were discovered. If you sneak in a few facts that people didn't know then that always helps eg, And now a hit from the 80's, I am sure you will recognise this as Tainted Love by Soft Cell but did you know that it was originally recorded in the 60's by a Northern Soul Artist, I'll tell you who after the record. (Remeber to talk like you are talking to one person so use the word you) Then play the record Then ask Did you remember it then? It was Gloria Jones (What you have done there is combined your announcement with a hook (that's a reason to keep the listener tuned in to your station) with a piece of trivia and listeners love trivia) eg Play a classic track like say 'Hey Mr Tambourine Man' and then after you have played it back announce it by saying That Was 'Mr Tambourine Man', I always thought it was recorded by The Byrds until I started working here and then I discovered it was actually recorded by 'The Fabulous Byrd Brothers' who later went on to change their name to The Byrds, it's amazing what you learn working at Radio XYZ. (What you have done their is to combine a piece of trivia with a link to mentioning your station name, and that is something that will impress your programme controller) Tee-up two of your friends (one male and one female) ask for callers to play a battle of the sexes, ignore all real callers and ring your two friends back. Ask them general knowledge questions and then declare that the winner of today's battle of the sexes was the males or the females. If you are going to do this, rehearse the format (and NOT the actual questions) with your friends beforehand. Thinks of variations on that theme, for example have a battle of the workforce where you ring friends at work and get them to get their colleagues involved, local companies won't mind because they will be getting a free mention And most importantly, find out who owns the radio station, chances are it will belong to a big group like Emap for example, then find out which other stations they also own and DO NOT nick any ideas from any of their other stations or presenters, they will know it if you do and they are looking for fresh ideas Hope this helps you with some ideas Good Luck Tricky Edited 21 Nov 05, 10:47 PM by Trickky

i've done a show before on there "100% British classic rock" which had loads of trivia and links joining songs to other songs, and i played the songs from beginning to end without talking over them as all stations do that and yes its very annoying. Trivia is a great way to keep the listener interested, my show whatever it will be will be filled with it as thats one of my strong points, i know loadsa silly bits of things about artists that are interesting and not many people know, i got good feedback of my first show because of this as it made it very interesting I've been thinking of doing a show based on a particular artist each week for example "Pink Floyd" and go through the history of the artist with songs in between, get local bands in to do acoustic versions, interviews of well known bands on why they like that particular artist and how they've influened their own music, get little interviews of the public on the first time they heard a particular song etc Also each month do a one off show on a particular year and talk about what was going on in the music industry, play songs, talk about what bands were formed then etc and link this into a monthly competition where the audience has to guess the year and whoever wins wins best of albums of the artists featured that month Will do a whats on guide too, whether that band is still touring and when if so in the near future, also if they have a tribute band inform when they are touring again etc What you think??? bex x

Bit cheeky I know but any chance you could memo me the play list. I love classic rock but I have to admit to being shaky on where which song is from country wise I mean. Be nice to see what you came up with. All the best with the next show Hugs Sapphire
