I think, therefore I am ... what? (4)

Apparently it is unusual to find someone who has met me in real life - so a friend of mine was told recently. 'Tis true that I do try to avoid hanging around in real life wherever possible - preferring a fantasy world in which everything has a happy ending and I can eat chocolate without getting fat(ter).

The sad thing is I am actually much the same in real life - imagine a commentary which basically consists of me waffling on like I do in my logs continuing throughout our meeting. Frankly, is it any wonder that so many of those who have met me have required long term psychological support? Though equally meeting many of them (subs excepted) has led me to appreciate the benefits of my fantasy world - a world in which I like Marmite, pegs are available free of charge on the NHS and pups prefer dog food to ankles!

I think that meeting people in real life is usually a problem when you first got to know one another through any kind of online forum. We can self edit like crazy in instant messenger, e mail and weblogs - though obviously some choose not to (which to my mind is often just a tad worrying).

Equally, I can build up a fantasy about the person I am talking to - he can tell me about his wooden leg, his patch over one eye and the parrot on his shoulder which shouts 'pieces of eight' and I will still be surprised when we arrange a meeting and Long John Silver turns up. Even photos don't necessarily help when you are besotted with the person you are corresponding with - you ignore the bolt through their neck, the love/hate tattoos on their eyelids and the 'I love Margaret Thatcher' tee-shirt!

Which brings me back to me in real life ...

I think, therefore I am

I'm pink, therefore I'm spam (the luncheon meat - please do not get it into your head that it is me that is responsible for all that junk e mail!)

xx

Aww ... I'll vouch that you're more than a figment of the collective IC imagination.
