Cholula and I went out on Friday night to meet up with Mike at The Bricklayers Arms, soon to be the home of The Putney Munch.
It's probably about twenty years since I last visited this particular hostelry and I was delighted to find it pretty much as I remembered it but better. The Bricklayers Arms is the oldest pub in Putney and has very much the feel of a small, friendly village pub. It's tucked away in a cul-de-sac just off the Lower Richmond Road, very close to the river and Putney Bridge.
The part of the pub we'll be using is the rear extension - a former blacksmith's forge. You'll find us (on Monday 26th September 05) near the fireplace, under the rope swing which hangs from the rafters and the very large paddle
Beccy is the Landlady of this unpretentious Free House. She takes the proper care of beers very seriously and - allegedly - sent a regular customer home early for 'being boring'... She's an open and friendly lass and is looking forward to meeting us all. If we're very, very good indeed and promise to be careful she just might let us have a go on the rope-swing.
The pub is still undergoing some essential renovations so is only open from 4pm 'til closing time at the moment but once the kitchen has been finished Beccy will be opening at lunchtimes too and providing food. On the night of the munch she'll do teas and coffees for those who prefer not to drink her fine ales... We'll be bringing nibbly things and Mike will bring more nibbles and cake!!!
*pause for cheers and applause*
More cause for applause is the fact that the ladies loos are bright and clean and furnished with - fanfare with flourishes - fresh flowers. And there's a nice little garden laid with Astroturf (TM).
The pub is wheel-chair friendly *more cheers* and the clientele are mixed and cover wide age-groups. The music is on the rock side of things and at conversational levels. There is space for parking outside but there are good public transport links - you can find details on the link above.
All in all, I whole-heartedly commend The Bricklayers Arms as a home for The Putney Munch and as a fine place to drop into whenever you are in Putney.
We're greatly looking forward to meeting you all on Monday 26th September so please do come along if you can. We don't bite (unless invited) and Mike is a great host. If it's your first munch you wo'n't be alone as it'll be the first for me and Cho, too.
*edit to get the links right... durrrr*
