A and I have attended a few scene events. One, on a semi-regular basis – well A has anyway. Before we attended anything pubic, we agreed that we would not allow the taking, or placing on a website any photographs. Not having attended anything before, I emailed one of the organisers with my concerns. The reply assured us that no photographs would be taken or displayed without permission. When attended the event I asked again, the organiser obviously a little irritated with my persistence, said this simply would not happen.

We stayed – we played.

Fast forward just over a year.

When we returned from France we discovered a photograph had been displayed on the groups website of A. To say I was furious was an understatement. I posted how upset I was and the photograph was quickly taken down. The organisers, to their credit, have now banned the use of cameras at these events and now only the organisers themselves can upload pictures onto the site. They apologised profusely and I can't think of anything else they can do now. Trust was broken, albeit unintentionally, and I'm not sure it can be restored.

I'm not here to 'name or shame' the event, just wanted to post as a warning. I know a lot of us are happy to pose in full BDSM regalia and shout from the rooftops about our kinkiness; but a great deal of us aren't. We made it quite clear about our wishes, and although it was simply an oversight, the best will in the world didn't prevent this happening. If you attend an event that allows cameras inside, then you must be prepared to find yourself on the web.

... as we discovered the hard way.

i agree it can be difficult. sometimes club owners are not aware someone has a camera either, particularly these days when digital cameras are so small and of course phones have em as well, so harder to spot and in the case of phones, harder to banish.

i went to a club in wales once, and the owner of the club insisted on taking pics, in the end, i suggested she stop, and promise not to use the ones taken, and that if she persisted, i would re arrange the camera into sommat useful like an ashtray.

on a more global note, one should also be careful of being in the background. once at the lff, whilst it was still at smiffys, someone was filming a prog about the event including interviews with attendees. they of course asked permission for filming individuals and the interviewees, but omitted to ask all those passing by behind the camera, which meant many were seen on the telly without knowledge or permission.

I agree with Mike...you have to be so aware these days. The biggest problem in your situation Mel was someone posting the pic of A without even THINKING to ask permission!!!

Pics are personal things even in a public domain.

Very true and an unacceptable invasion of your privacy and choices.

Anxious about this, the few times that I have been to scene clubs I remained fully hooded throughout. It was hot and sweaty and made getting down steep steps in high heels perilous and for some reason orienteering my lighter towards my cigarette was very difficult with a hood on, but I preserved my privacy.
