Thank you for sharing that. I knew a young woman some time ago who was stone, but I didn't understand what she meant. She gave me a book to read as she found it difficult to explain (she was shy on personal things). It was a sort of biography of a stone butch in america in the 50's to 70's. She grew up in Buffalo and eventually found lesbian bars which were at that time subject to police raids. Eventually after quite a hard life she went as far as taking hormone injections and passing as a man working in a steel works as I recall. In the 70's I believe she became an activist in the US for Gay and Lesbian rights. It was one of the most heartrending and heartwarming books I have ever read and I spent a lot of the time reading it in tears of both sadness and joy. I just wish I could remember the title and author. (edited - found the book - Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg) XxX

Stone Butch Blues is an amazing book..it is emotive and very graphic..Butch lesbians had a very hard time in the 50's & 60's..in fact I found that until the recent 90's butch lesbians still had to endure severe harrasment and physical beatings..the mob mentality being " you want to look and act like a guy you will be beaten like a guy". Thank you for your comments. Syr Ice aka Daddi Lee | |
