I always forget that IC has forums, and only ever read blogs....so thanks to Tanos for the link in his blog! It was me that took the first (dark haired) WPC around, and attempted to hid her in my coat, she told me she had just left her husband and was looking for something really 'amazing' to do, and that she had been curious for a long time about BDSM.
As we left, the next 2 (ones that had been hanging around all day) decided that they would come in too, these were taken round in full uniform (I can't hide 2 under my coat My thanks to Master Cosmic and Gloria for helping me with the information that these officers wanted!! Special thanks go to all those visitors to Kinkfest that stopped us on the way around for a chat - proving just what a friendly bunch we all are, and making the officers feel welcome!! That goes a long way in relations, for they confide they are just as nervous of what it is that we do, as we are of them! Curiosity kills kats - one day my 9 lives will be gone, maybe then I will learn

I actually found it quite reassuring that our boys and girls in blue did come and look around( even if I did have to resist the urge to spank one of their bums and zap one of the others) But it shows what a mature attitude towards the lifestyle these people have. Also fun to see them getting into the spirit of the occasions. Caz

Hmmm I always find it curious that, on the whole, if you treat people with respect and as if a friend you tend to be met with the same energy in return. Just think how pleasant it is for the police to be met with warmth, humour and playfulness when often they recieve suspicion, threat and confrontation.

Yes, I agree: "do as you would be done by" is how I always start with people (but since "tend to" doesn't cover 100% of people, you occasionally have to switch to treating them according to how they have treated you
I think what happened at KF2 is definitely the way forward: and when you think about, similar things happen at Pride Week in Manchester now: I think it was a police inspector who came in to MUD last year to use the toilet near the entrance during their open day. Funny but there are more police officers into BDSM than people realise... also its getting more well known that social workers (even though they try to keep it quiet) and Solicitors etc are also into BDSM and fetish. After all they are just people... the clothes they wear some times is just work after all. Good on those that trust us enough to let us know who they are and the jobs that they do.... along with the free advise they supply. Yes there are, LR, but i think what many people maybe don't think about (especially those with careers that aren't affected by BDSM) is this: what a policeman (solicitor, socialworker, tinker, tailor, spy) does in the privacy of his/her own bedroom is one thing - what is quite different is being on the wider scene, advertising oneself on websites, going to parties, etc. etc. this brings one into contact with many many other people, some of whose motives may be less than pure, and in this way, things can and do happen and names/websites/photos can be found that cause problems for the policeman (solicitor, etc.). Thats even without the problem of being outed by other vengeful people, as Master Lawrence found out the hard way. Until the whole question of whether what someone does in their private life can be held to affect their career or whether their private life is sacrosanct (a question that i think is at the heart of the Lawrence case), even when widely publicised on the net, i think those who have careers such as the police, the law, social work, etc. are going to have to be careful. Yes, the attitudes of the police & the judiciary are changing, slowly, as they begin to understand who and what we are, and who and what we are not, which is a great thing. But lets remember those who still have to worry about their personal and professional worlds colliding, and do what we can to support them, at least till the question above is resolved.. and those people can have the same freedoms that many of the rest of us do. kethry{BP}/ke'chara{BP} xx

Yes, I think having more of us out in the open does help to quash the fire that used to burn oh so brightly when it turned out that one of 'us' was bad and that the public heard about. Headline: "Man found guilty of beating his wife a lot." Detail: "He is a pervert and went to some BDSM-related thing called KinkFest! They therefore all beat their wives!" The more of us there are who are both honourable and 'out', the more such detail will sound as ridiculous as "He drinks coffee at Starbucks! They therefore all beat their wives!" "He's not a male sub, he's madkat."

Thank *god* BP doesn't drink coffee at Starbucks is all i can say.. that's HORRIBLE!!! Why isn't anyone doing anything about it? I say we should all boycott Starbucks!!! heh. seriously: yup, i think you're right. I think one group of the population that *really* needs to catch onto this concept is the local papers... but then, i might be being overly optimistic here. LOL. kethry{BP}/ke'chara{BP} xx

Yes, newspapers sell what they *think* their readers want to read. About 4 years ago I was contacted by a female friend. She apparently had been woken one morning early, was asked to step outside (in her nightdress and dishevelled) and was instantly photgraphed by her local newspaper. Apparently one of her neighbours had recognised her in a soft core porn video, knew she was a candidate in a forthcoming round of local elections, and told the paper (A year ago I realised that in fact politics and BDSM don't mix and withdrew from my first love, politics, for that reason). They ran a story, it then was sold on by them to national papers like the Sport. The most worrying aspect of the story is that the local newspaper then contacted her local Council (who housed her and her young child) saying that she was using her home for immoral purposes and asked if she should be allowed to live there (her home in fact never even featured in the video) For weeks she then also lived in the fear that she and her child might be evicted until the Council said that she had done nothing wrong and was not in breach of her tenancy agreement.
