Cru: Ummm, well there's some excellent Orkney crab patè in the fridge - goes very well on white bread.

f: Ugh! I don't eat patè - it's cruel.

Cru: What on Earth are you on about?

f: It is. The way they make it is cruel.

Cru, sensing another of 'those' conversations in the offing: Darling, I'm sure crab patè isn't ... um ... "cruel".

f, going into 'right-on lecture' mode: Mistress, do you know how it's made? It's horrible. I never eat it on principle, and I love mushroom patè ...

Cru, light dawning: How the devil can you be cruel to mushrooms?

f: I really don't know how you can laugh about it.

Cru: filly, I do believe you're thinking about patè de fois gras.

f, archly: Um, no ... all patè, I think you'll find, Mistress ... It's all made the same way.

Cru: No, pet. Fois gras is the one made by force- feeding geese to make their livers abnormally large. That I grant you is cruel. All other patè is just made from normal cuts of meat with cream and spices and what- have-you.

f: Really? Are you sure?

Cru: Certain. The only cruel thing about my crab patè is a crab was killed so we could smear it on bread. As to mushroom patè ... well, even my fiendish imagination is being challenged by trying to devise a way of being cruel to a mushroom ...

f: Urrr ... I thought the ingredients were force fed to create the flavour, y'know, like bees and honey ...

Cru, politely allowing digestion: ...

f: So farmhouse patè is ok?

Cru: Farmhouse patè? Yes, the same.

f: Oh.

Cru: What's up?

f: Um, well, you know I went to dinner with Chic the other day? He had the farmhouse patè as a starter ... and I really ripped into him about it. I thought he looked at me strangely ...

Cru: Well, Chic's known you a long time. I'm sure he's quite used to these things ... as am I.

f: Yes Mistress, I suppose so.
