I've just read Teine's grumbling about irc conventions, and although I feel his attitude is a bit idealistic, I do agree that in chatrooms where there aren't rules about how to address dominants, subs and switches should be allowed to call 'em exactly what they please ... and deserve ; )
When I first started to use irc, we got a 'Dom' in our local room who made a blessed nuisance of himself; he was the most humourless, insufferable bore, he was arch and patronsing with anyone who had a lowercase nick, including one of the ops, and despite myself and a number of others trying to explain, couldn't grasp that bdsm wasn't just about tying girls up and shaggin' 'em. We did try (honest) but it became obvious from his descriptions of himself that he was an overweight boor, and his nick and attitude implied neo-Nazi leanings, which didn't endear him to us either.
He kept coming back, and whinging he was being banned from other rooms, and we all got tired of making polite 'oh dear' noises whilst giggling behind our hands. One night I wanted to go into the room and saw he was there. I cracked. Although the other users didn't know me that well, they gave me the floor as they caught on I was up to something ...
