Asked for some change by one of the homeless by the Sall Bash. Decided to try the approach my boss does and offered to buy them a hot drink and hot meal, after all he told me he I was hungry and cold.

Fuck off you tight bitch.
Told my boss, he laughed for the past 18 months he has made that offer to anyone who asked for change, and has had only one person who accepted the offer.
I do want to help and have managed to get my work to do some really good stuff to help at the hostel.
I'll keep offering the meal and drink, I'll keep on at work to do more, and I will continue to help out any way I can but I am not handing money over for drugs or booze. I rather selfishly only buy alcohol for myself or those I love.
So how many asks before I get to buy someone food?

on a similar note i witnessed a lady offer to buy a homeless guy a sandwich which he accepted, on returning with a chicken sandwish the guy took one look at it and said "i can't eat that I am a vegetarian" and they reckon beggars can't be choosers!

A guy on here offers a meal to many people as he travels over most of the lower half of this country in his tin can on wheels. Seems he has a similar problem, in that very few people take him up on his offer. Those that have taken him up on his offer have praised him for his generosity. On a personal note I am such a cynical bastard that I never give money to any beggar be they male or female. There is a fine line between sanity and insanity. I have a foot firmly planted either side of that line

Yeah, I sometimes think that.. But then I think - "Hey, that's what *I'm* going to spend it on anyway..."

I do the same and only one took my offer up and I brought them breakfast but only learning from doing out reach work many years ago, as I learnt that some ask for 20p for bus fare as they didn't have enough etc and then as they get a £5 or a tenner and off they go for their fix. Not saying all are but thats why I always offer food and a drink.

if i offer anything it's i always offer money,, many long term homless people won't live so long so if they get a fix so what,, you made their day i little happier,, they spend how they chose, allow them their a little escape from reality, i,m not decrying other people's morality about this on buying food at all,, it's all personal choice,,
Please excuse crap spelling cause i,m rubbish

I'd take him up on the offer but he's never over our way, hell he can come here for a home cooked meal and I've said as much on his blog! http://www.flickr.com/photos/jezzebelle/

I have bought a sandwich, water, biscuits and dogfood for one guy (who had his dog with him), and another chap outside a McDonalds got a hamburger, fries and tea - both were delighted and thanked me. I too feel awkward just handing over cash even though I realise it is a bit hypocritical to impose my values on them... There's a somebody I'm longing to see, I hope that he turns out to be, someone to watch over me

I do a little with the homeless and we have a rule that we don't give them money. Around these parts there is somewhere where they can get a cooked breakfast and also a cooked evening meal every day. Many of them have addiction issues and so there is every chance that the money will not be spent on food. They are likely to have eaten already. I notice that a good many have health issues that started them on a downwards spiral and a few are just down on their luck and need a little support. I don't know if it's the drink/drugs or just being used to little food but many don't seem to have a large appitite. They appear to lead such crazy chaotic lives so it's good to give them a meal and an hour in a warm environment a couple of times a week. We feed about 40 a night. I don't think that covers everyone that has a need but sometimes other things appear to be more important to them.

There was a young female Big Issue seller that I used to see at the station most days. she'd fallen on hard times whilst studying and ended up homeless. I used to give her toiletries such as toothpaste, shampoo, lip salve, moisturisers and multi vitamins etc that I got on bogof offers. She was in a hostel and having the basics to maintain her cleanliness and hygiene went a long way to keeping some self-esteem. She really appreciated them as the little money she was able to raise went on getting a roof over her head and paying for food. Last time I saw her, she was getting a flat and going back to uni to complete her degree. Hope she made it. Labels are for jamjars.
