Pope Benedict XVI: "I don't think believing and an acceptance of the 4-billion-year-old God is in any way inconsistent with a belief in the earth going around the sun" (This Morning, speaking with Philip Schofield)

He went on to say "I am not so confident as to say that I don't believe in physics, I would prefer to say I am a bit agnostic on the subject".

Mr Benedict had earlier caused controversy in claiming the pope-mobile had worked by magic and divine power, but last month conceded that it needed to be recharged on a regular basis, opening up the possibility that it was electrons that made the wheels turn around, and that at one stage the universe may have been a highly compact Lorentz invariant energy-mass blob.

Controversial science protagonist Galileo Galilei declined to give an interview in response, but sent a short email from his home in Hell stating "Oh FFS, not this old chestnut again".

Anglicans responded angrily with David Jenkins, the uncontroversial vicar of Durham (retired by force) stating that "the big bang was almost certainly a conjuring trick with some old super-string and not to be taken literally".

Nicely done. It's actually interesting that the position of both Anglican and Catholic churches is (I believe) that Genesis is alegorical, that the earth is much older than the Bible says and that evolution is a fact (albeit under god's direction). This makes the vehemence with which an increasing number of christians argue for bliblical literalism all the more perplexing.

Well I not sure of the CofE's position on the subject but I do believe that the catholics have forgiven one or two scientific figures but still believe in gensis.

No we most certainly do not! I'm Catholic, and from the Republic of Ireland where nearly everyone is Catholic- and we all believe in science. You need to go to bible belt states in America and hook up with born-again Christians for creationist beliefs (not all of them, obviously...) Or you do find a very few traditional and aging Presbyterians in Norn Iron who agree with it.

oh come on, this is a serious forum - Peter and Phil are two aspects of the duality.

Well that clears that up and yes,its known that born again Christians believe in the creationist belif to such an extent that they decry all scientific evidence and push this idea through some USA states via the school system which is totally wrong as it is contradicting scientific evidence.

I think you'll find that the accepted stance from the majority of the mainstream Christian churches is that Genesis is a book of stories to explain, in simple terms that Man created Sin....everything else is to explain to pre-science believers how we all got here.

I believe it's the fundamentalist Christian fringes (mostly in the deep South) that have the concept of "Intelligent Design" and "Christian World" (a theme park where Man and Dinosaurs lived in peace and harmony - I kid you not!!!)

Odd how some of our cousins "over the pond" are quick to attack other religious fundamentalism as terrorist training grounds but Intelligent Design and shooting doctors in abortion clinics is Democracy!!!! Go figure!
