Define 'value'. Which values should we consider? Whose values should we live by? Do we exterminate those whose values do not match our own? How far does that extend? Are there tolerances to that value boundary?

Just got this on memo, they have agreed that I can post, but would like to remain anonymous: "When a girl first starts producing eggs they should harvest 12 and the sterilise her. Once she reaches 18, she can apply to have the eggs fertilised by a mans sperm. Both the man and woman need to pass an aptitude test on intelligence, financial resources and the ability to bring up a child.”

Blimey. a) I didn't know Tony Blair had a profile on here. b) He isn't as left wing as he used to claim. I have the perfect accent for conflict resolution, shame about the personality.

^^^ exactly It sounds nice to say you might be able to get rid of "bad things", the problem is it is a very slippery slope, and who determines what is "valuable" or "not valuable", and what happens to people who do not meet the "valuable" standard. You can easily see how "perfect" or "desirable" could be substituted for "valuable". A good example of how this is an ethical minefield is deafness - in the abstract, it would appear logical to say that if you could ensure that no babies born in the future were deaf, that would surely be a good thing... but... does that they mean that people who are deaf or have hearing impairments now are somehow "less valuable"? what about deaf culture and sign language, are they less valuable than other cultural manifestations or languages?
There's a somebody I'm longing to see, I hope that he turns out to be, someone to watch over me

If it wasn't so offensive, it'd be funny - They devise this master plan, and come up with three criteria, at least two of which they'd clearly fail themselves. |
