Happy diamond jubilee to Her Majesty for tomorrow. Being an old punky skinheady type I have mixed feelings about our royal family. Clearly they are in a position of privilege, but at the same time most of them are not the monsters some would have us believe them to be. Still 60 years in the same job is quite an achievement, regardless of how she came by that position. I think it is worth celebrating.

I wonder what John Lydon is thinking at the moment?

He's probably thinking about why he buys Country Life Butter.

compared to other countries we all live a priviledged life here

i'm just really relieved we have a Royal family, i think in many ways they help keep balance, and i do have a deep admiration for a lot of what they do

bless 'Em

Well, I am a leftie, but I am also a monarchist. One thing that many people don't think about is that the armed forces do not pledge loyalty to the state, but to the Queen herself. Now this doesn't matter in a normal situation where the government and the militia are more-or-less the same thing.

But in a situation where a coup was attempted, or an extremist government took power, the monarch would hold the reins of power, and theoretically would be able to depose the government or overthrow the rebellion. Of course, that is assuming she didn't support the extremist government, which is always a possibility.

Anyway, I see the monarchy as supplying a safety-valve, which is something missing in the US and many other democracies, and is why I feel she has an importance that transcends her normal function.

'To loose' means 'to let go'. 'Lose' means you can't find it. 'Discrete' means separate. 'Crescendo' means 'growing'. 'Fulsome' doesn't mean 'full'. 'Unique' doesn't mean 'very unusual'.

Personally I think the monarchy is an outdated feudal institution and an unnecessary burden to the taxpayer. I hope she has a super day.
