Camcorder choice (7)

Kinky_Camera_Group's profile . Kinky_Camera_Group group posts

I am looking for an HD camcorder in the lower price range to help a friend, but with the main proviso it has to have an external mic input to get half-decent audio.

A bit of half-arsed research pointed to the Panasonic HDC-SD90, currently on Amazon for £360, but I wondered if anyone here has suggestions for something better?

I'm not going to recommend a camcorder because it is not my field but just to say that I've gone down the road of separate sound recording for video and then synchronisation in software.

I use Adobe Premiere Elements 9 for this.

Thanks for that suggestion, and that is probably the best route, but in this case it needs to be moderately portable to be taken around an event, sometimes on tripod but occasionally hand-held. As such, I'm kind of stuck with the choice of small-ish camcorder and external mic.

My set up is portable. I just use a free standing stereo microphone which internally records to an SD card. It also has a line input but this needs controlling externally not to overload it. However if you are just using the mic then it is very small and portable. :)

I prefer this to plugging in a mic to my cameras because I don't need cables and the mic is far more controllable.

What is it you use? If reasonably priced it might be better as I could deploy 2 in the areas of interest and mix/balance the sound recording afterwards.

OK, so not that cheap at £199 each. Still, not that much more than a basic mic, so worth considering.

How do you sync the audio? It is correlated with the camcorder's built-in mic, or do you have to use something akin to the old clapperboard at beginning (or end) of a video clip?

I keep the camera's own audio track until I have synched the other track (I do it by moving it until there is no longer an echo but there may be a better way). Once the two tracks are matched then I delete the camera one.

I use the free Audacity software for getting the audio track ready for synching.
