Thing is though, we all have different taste.
If you go on any photography forum, where people invite feedback on their images, it's extremely rare for a single image to be liked by everyone - in fact, I don't think I've ever seen it happen!
I'm a photographer, and regularly show images to small groups of people - and they're always divided as to which are their favourites.
But on IC, another world exists, where some photographers seem capable of consistently producing images that everyone likes, and everyone rates as outstanding. It does seem a tad suspicious.

If you look at the images on the first page, it's obvious that they're doing this by producing images that are consistently very similar in subject and look: mostly black and white pictures of attractive young female models in neatly tied rope bondage.
As I've said already, the "everyone rates as outstanding" point is untrue too: there's always a spread of votes, and usually very few "outandings".

That sort of pic doesn't do anything for me, but then I don't rate pics. Those who rate pic do some to have a predilection to pretty girls in bondage. |

Which is my point, sort of. If everyone was rating pics, ratings would even out - Maybe only a few people are rating the pics - whether its the photographers themselves, their mates, or just a handle of people are into attractive bound women, but something's wrong somewhere.
The other possible scenario is that there is a reasonable spread of voters; the average ratings are all very close together, but these particular pics are just pipping all the others by a very small margin. Seems unlikely though.
Personally, I don't think it'd be a bad thing if the 'Top Pictures' concept was ditched, and replaced by a random selection of any pics which manage to get a few 'outstandings'. Variety is the spice of life ? |

Tonight we've starting enforcing this change that was trailed last month and in November: we're now limiting the Top Pictures page to one profile per person. Doing this is a manual process, so some will slip through especially on the lower rated pages where it's not such an issue, and it's not something to get really worked up about  However, it will get a bit more diversity on the all important first few pages, and will deter anyone who was intending to create lots of profiles to occupy more of the new layout (no one has been doing that.)
We're also asking people, at the point where they can enable ratings, not to enable ratings for more than one copy of the same picture. For example, so we don't get the same image from the photographer and model being rated. This isn't such a big deal either, as it doesn't improve their rankings on the Top Pictures pages, but it should get a bit more variety too.

A much better system. Personaly I don't mind "sacrificing" 1 profile's photos to allow more variety in the Top Pictures and yes the duplication of images wasn't a good thing ^Thunder^

I didn't notices the top pictures had changed but think it's much better now and not that far of what I and a few others suggested a few months back in this thread that I'm sure must have been part of the reason the top pictures were reviewed http://www.informedconsent.co.uk/posts/315741/6
Well I like it as long as I've still got photos with 99% ratings that is.

I think it would be possible for a few friends to each spend 30 minutes rating pictures to influence the positions. But maybe I'm underestimating the number of people who rate pictures. Do we know how many?
I welcome Admin's changes to the Top Pictures, but the latest ones will have only minor effect.
I note that the number one picture has been there for some time. I advocated some time ago that there should be a limit on how long a picture could be in the top 100. That would open it up to a greater variety of pictures. Carol Dee rope enthusiast
