You do need to understand the risks associated with using a cable hoist versus a chain block. As a cable, the condition of it is of much higher importance, you need to make sure it wraps onto the drum properly and evenly, and that you're not cris-crossing it on there. Also, as a motor driven hoist, you need to be aware of the potential for a motor failure, and have a backup plan for getting the sub back down again. It's also worth noting that these hoists are not designed for lifting a person, and you run some risks doing that with them. Most people work around their psychological demons, we harness ours up and take them out for a ride.

Actually if you bought one and stripped it down to extract the motor, throwing the rest away, you would have quite a cheap motor for that little project you were going to do.
There would also be no prospect of being stuck suspended with the house on fire and power off.
I bought one of their compressors and it lasted 3 Years and 3 days before going to the great scrapheap in the sky.
So thats what you should expect from this item as well. Don't get me started on Creosote !

I beg to differ. With the house on fire and power off, how do you propose to get the sub down? Always have a backup plan. That could be having someone on hand who is strong enough to help support your weight while you free yourself, or it could be having a chain block nearby to provide a manual way to detach from the hoist. You certainly wouldn't want to undo the clutch.... Whizz! Bang! Unless you're alluding to solo play with a hoist, which is about the silliest and most dangerous thing I've heard all week... if I didn't work with a bunch of mongs...
