Just like to note that for me it's a bit sad that there is a stigma associated with bankers/executives, while it is perfectly acceptable to be a 'glamour model' or a 'promoter'...

It would be quite alarming if the discussion descended (seriously) from the (admittedly extravagant) compensation of executives to questioning the very existence of banks/companies/people who run them.

Banks and the finance sector are a necessary part of the economy but they shouldn't consider themselves as 'masters of the universe' because nobody is :)

However, the growth of hedge funds, venture capital, derivatives and various financial products grew out of control and still is that is why a 'bust' is coming.

Happiness is a warm bum :)

Actually, Groom of the Stool was a very high status and prozed job... The rationale being that the Groom had close and trusted access to the King - and was able to intercede in requests and ask for favours on behalf of other courtiers......

Tip: read the whole thread. Then you don't say the same thing as two others before you. :-)

Being the man that says "MIND THE GAP!" At tube stations every time a tube train pulls up Potential g/f asks "What line of work are you in ?" I answer trying to sound cool "I work for the tube network" Naturally she asks "What as a driver? Or station manager ect?" "No I say MIND THE GAP everytime a train pulls up"

....... I wonder if he talks in his sleep ? :) :)

nooooooooooooo

Yessssss. And has been for a long time. In fact, the motivation to introduce recorded announcements was probably a court case in the 1950s following on from someone falling into the gap and injuring himself. A large part of the ensuing court case revolved around whether the announcement was made, was made audibly, and was intelligible. From memory, the manual mind-the-gap announcements of that era were loud, but virtually unintelligible ("Miiiiiiiiner... apppppppp") and it was really no more than a Pavlovian response to the bellowing halfway down the platform that alerted disembarking passengers.

The modern recorded announcement is a model of clarity, however: http://www.angelfire.com/sc/loadreg/rm/soundsmed... / London Underground Sounds/ Mind the Gap Announcement, about 20 seconds in.

Edited to add link to Mind-the-Gap announcement.
