These days I have the pleasure of dipping in or out of The City as I (and my work) prefer/dictate. And within 2 hours I've left it behind and am back in the glorious Countryside. But I still stay over (too often) to enjoy the night life. It's hard to beat. It wasn't really a request.

As I am sure you have been told many times (grins), size isn't everything, particularly as a measure of influence. Your second assertion is comletely unsubstantiated. I do agree that many workers in the City remain blissfully unaware that their economic success comes from the good fortune of having been born in the home counties and commuting distance of an area which has historically generated a significant portion of the nations wealth. Eddie George, God rest his soul, once suggested, tongue in cheek, that the rest of the UK should be shut down as an overhead. As with all such statements, there was a kernel of truth in it, a consequence of geography, historical factors and recent political decisions which have perhaps given the capital, and in particular the City, a disproportionate amount of importance on the global stage. As far as culture goes, I concur entirely. I regularly feel guilt over the amount of events I do not get to. Any city in which you can see both Cagney and Lacey (I know, an unusual benchmark, but indulge me) on separate stages within the same month, must be doing something right. It's down to the fact that moving money and credit around doesn't in itself create any wealth. Indeed most of the wealth flowing through the city of London is created in other (very often poorer) countries and siphoned off to produce a fat living for many as it passes through.
In any case the proof of the pudding is in the eating and my contention that the finance sector in both Europe and the USA is bloated and out of all proportion to production will be proved in reality in the next few years. So whilst I cannot provide a proof in words I will just say 'watch this space'

That's like saying that the heart doesn't create any blood and is merely circulating blood that's created elsewhere. While it's true, it doesn't take away from the fact that it's still a pretty important organ. Yes, the financial sector blew up, but why do you think the banks were bailed out? Certainly not because the governments loved the bankers

What happened a few years ago was the initial tremors before the real earthquake. Comparing the finance sector to the heart is like mistaking the oil for the engine of a car.
