Without wishing to get on a soapbox, and I'm no expert - but isn't the Rhino an endangered species? If so, I'm a little confused as to why people would choose to buy a whip made of their hide???

I'm more than happy to be enlightened if I'm wrong?

Obviously a Rhino hide sjambok doesn't need a whole rhino skin, it's quite normal just to take a little bit off the back.

Are you being facetious or serious here? It's still taking the hide off an endangered animal.

Isn't you comment no different to saying "we only use a tiny bit of the elephant tusk to make the ivory ornament we want - don't need the whole elephant"?

Hope to god you were being facetious.

well it depends

some are hippo some are rhino some are syntetic and some are braided kangaroo hide.

and it depends how the rhino hide was aquired

But if the hide used to make it is from hippo, kangaroo, or any other animal - or synthetic for that matter, surely one cannot call it rhino hide. That would be trade description breach right there, surely?

Anyway, I'm just asking why it's ok to be so breezy about sourcing leather from an endangered animal: but then ethics and BDSM are seldom good bedfellows so I'll butt out now.

I want to hold you close / Skin pressed against me tight
Lie still, and close your eyes, girl / So lovely, it feels so right
I want to hold you close / Soft breasts, beating heart
As I whisper in your ear / I want to f*cking tear you apart

sjamboks are not always rhino though - besides the rhino hide ones are to rigid and break to easily IME

Might be worth having a look at some of these sites - can't guarantee how quickly they can turn the production and distribution around for you:

Are you suggesting that as long as the rhino was skinned alive and then released, it's ok?

no im suggesting that if it was culled as part of a conservation project then its ok and it comes with all the certificates to prove it, not sure if they do it with rhino actually but they do with elephants and hippo's for sure.

You can buy whips off ebay that can be delivered quickly to you if you are looking for something for hanging on a wall or for him to walk around holding in a coil.

Be warned though, my ex bought one of these and i gave it two throws in the air to see if it would crack and the whole thing unravelled itself.

If you want to buy a proper whip with the intention of him actually using it then you need to spend money and wait for one to be hand made with care. Sometimes the best things come to those that wait.

Just curious, what about after they die naturally, as every animal must eventually. Would they use the skins then?

Of course they do. In South Africa, there are conservation projects that are sensitive to the use of any part of the natural resources there. When an animal dies, they look to sell as much of it as they can, all fully licensed - even elephant hair.

When I was there, I was shown such things in shops that hide could be bought in. Anything from Antelope to Zebra, big or small.

To suggest that anyone offering the hide of a protected species could sell it openly on the international market without proper certification is just naive.

I am not involved in that industry, but I am not without an understanding of how such business is conducted legitimately.

The OP was a simple enough question, with a simple enough answer. I don't know many whip makers or much about whips. The people who do, seem to have given some good advice.
