So , questions are ;

1. Historical chic lit /Julia Quinn

2. Jane Eyre.

3. goodnight Mr Tom makes me cry

4. Fermentation. not really a kinky book but brilliant maid scene moping up milk and for the cheese lovers of IC every chapter has a description of a different cheese.

5. In stitches. Life in an accident and emergency.

These change every few weeks or a few days. But this is the list at the moment.

1. Bernard Cornwell - the Sharpe series

2. Not really read many classics, I did like Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, mostly because it is so relivent to what is going on in the world today.

3. Long way down by Nick Hornby

4. Not read any kinky booka

5. Second Coming by John Niven. Made me laugh so much and it had such a simple message at the heart of it.

Adama: What do you hear, Starbuck?
Starbuck: Nothing but the rain, sir.
Adama: Then get your gun, and bring the cat in.
Starbuck: Aye-aye, sir.

1 Neo Noir. Crime in general. NOT bleeding golden age locked room mysteries or Agatha Christie

2 The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Drugs, murder, (or is it?) I just spent years living in Rochester, the Gothic Cathedral city Dickens based Cloisterham on, and you can make up your own ending to this unfinished masterpiece.

3 Money Martin Amis (Black comedy sleaze written from a poet's perspective. Soulful, too.)

4 Thomasina P N Dedaux (very hot kinky Victoria CP written by a Canadian poet to high Eng Lit standards.)

5 Hannibal Thomas Harris Very surprising ending, I bought first day then read it straight through practically non stop. Third day of publication some thoughtless scumbag gave away the big surprise. Touching because it's a love story and massively influential for anyone, like me, who writes sometimes to shock - sex, drugs, violence, fetish - but also likes jokes, well researched material, and psychological depth. People, places and plots. The opposite of what cunts like Will Self do...

1. Favourite genre and author

Genre: hysterical (oops, historical) fiction and biography.

Author: Hemingway.

2. Favourite classic

Tristram Shandy

3. Favourite modern

Ooh errr... Currently (I'm fickle): The Uncommon Reader and Chesil Beach.

4. Favourite kinky

The curious undercurrent of kinky suspicion that seems to surround Widmerpool in "Dance to the music of Time". Thing is, I think It may only be me wits spotted it.

5. Most influential/surprising/touching

Oh, Cheshil Beach, absolutely. I cried.

1. I'm not sure I have one; Elmore Leonard for crime, John Le Carre for spy, Douglas Adams for hitchhikers...whatever I happen to be reading now.

2. Brighton Rock

3. Roddy Doyle-The Van. But ask me next week and it could easily be something else.:)

4. Not my cup of tea.

5. The Van is surprisingly touching.

"Me and Kevin, we're just not the same"
Women are from Reigate, men are from Reigate. Not all of them of course, that would be silly, some are from Pimlico, or Cleethorpes, or that little village in Derbyshire whose name eludes me, or Bridlington, or Weston Super Mare, or Clac....

Interesting. A generational Thing probably: I'd see Stieinbeck as modern rather than classic. No less fine for all that.

A modern classic? Or in some publisher's speak Vintage? Penguin doing 20 year old 'Classics' now so...I'm confused...I really can't decide whether the 1920s and 30s can ever be Classic. Feels modern to me.
