Do you feel any responsibility on IC? (or similar) (44)

This post is on the Other BDSM web board.

I would appreciate all opinions on whether people feel they have any responsibility when they choose to blog/post etc

What do I mean by this?

Well, people will read what you post, it may influence their thinking or actions, even beliefs.

Some people are louder, some quieter, some more forceful in their own self-belief and opinions, and some more led by others.....and all grades in between. Preaching to the choir on this site on that point I know :)

So bearing that in mind, do you good people think you have any responsibility to be fair-minded, responsible, not lead others astray, not advocate potentially harmful opinions/behaviours (subjective I know).....etc? Have care of what you say, even in jest, and so on?

Or.....is it more.......each for themselves....up to individuals to have responsibility for themselves? and indeed we shouldn't, and shouldn't have to censor ourselves?

We are all adults here, its not strictly a community.....and its only a website right?

Tathagata Buddha, the Father Buddha said "with our thoughts, we make the world"......well I bet he never had to build a flippin' shed!
Now listen...I did not "submit" my latest project - I THRUST it upon you...with great fury and vengeance...and stuff - alright?!?

Now who said we wuz good people...........lol.

My short anwer to this would be, yes; we have a responsibility to seek to be fair minded, responsible, and not to intentionally lead others astray. No more so than in life in general of course; and we are allowed to have a little fun sometimes, too.........

I think people are really good about pointing out mis-information and unsafe practices. To be honest, not a lot of the more experienced people post anymore and I don't know how many have left.

But, when there is something that is WRONG, there are still enough people who will pitch in and say something. Also, there are enough people who discuss safety and things that new people will, if they do their reading, learn a lot.

Yes, people should be responsible for themselves, ultimately. There are enough people who care, though, that if someone asks they will receive sensible replies.

Having said that, I read on a thread on FL today some of the most utmost hogwash I have read in AGES. I think that although people might say that we tend to be a bit...errr...pedantic and not as much "fun" here, the quality and accuracy of information here is miles ahead of other sites.

ETA: That being said, we still do take the mickey...but it is pretty obvous when we do.... I think anyway.

@Play_Space - Next party is Friday, February 3, 2012 and the first Friday of every month!

Agree with all you say there, I suppose I wonder with some of the more extreme views/stories.....whether people consider the influence it might have on others or not

There are some posts that induce my concern about the writer, more often than my concern for the reader.

@The_Coven / @The_Problem_Page / I want the "Moon on a stick and the Stars suspended from bunting". / So many haystacks, so few needles! / Any man can be what a woman wants him to be, if he wants to be with her... relinquish the power to her and let her lead the way.

Yes.

I believe I have a responsibility to consider the impact that I say on the people around me. I cannot ignore that responsibility.

On the other hand, I also believe that people have to take responsibility for how they choose to respond to what I post.

So - in simple terms - I would never post anything intended to insult, demean or endanger another. But I equally don't expect some hypersensetive reader to tell me I'm evil because they don't like what I am saying.

I don't believe that it is a matter of censorship. Freedom of speech is the right to shout 'fire' in a burning building - not the right to insult people oe their beliefs.

All the more reason for people to take responsibility for themselves and to apply their own values and good sense to anything they read, be it viewpoint or advice.

There are no 'right' (also sometimes called twooo) answers, although maybe some opinions are saner than others. :-p

And indeed someone's very good advice or perfectly valid viewpoint for them, might be positively dangerous in your own situation.

The web in general and IC in particular are great in that they open us up to an infinite variety of views on an infinite range of subjects. But... it is definitely up to each of us to analysis, consider & evaluate any such web offerings against the realities of our own person & environment.

[And for those who will comment that people are often asking about subjects they have no way of getting verification elsewhere on - if you can't evaluate any advice, proceed very very carefullly!]

ETA That I do feel some responsibility for my own posts and hope that I follow that path.

Subbies are always wrong... even when they are right :)
