Yes, that's what the title says - on my new book that I bought at the weekend. I'm not an avid reader, far from it. I enjoy reading, but I go through phases. One minute I have my head stuck in books, the next, jack shit. Fuck all. Can't be doing with it. That said, I have very limited time to read, anyway. However...
At the weekend I strolled into a branch of Waterstones, and promptly spent an hour wandering around. I had no idea whatsoever what I was looking for, but I had one of those itches to buy a book. I say that with a little trepidation. You get those itches, too, don't you? So a book was what I wanted, and Waterstones seemed as good a place as any. Crime has always interested me. Serial killers etc. I asked at the counter. Yes, I did. I said...
"Hi. Do you happen to have any new books on serial killers? I'm thinking of taking serial killing up as a hobby, you see."
So, okay, of course I didn't say the last half of that. And, truth is, I don't have any desires of becoming a serial killer. No, I just thought it might raise a smile, for the purpose of this blog. I probably failed. If so, fuck it. I tried. Miserable bastards. So, yeah, I asked if they had any new books on serial killers.
"Actually, we do!", she said. "There's one that's literally just been released, about Jack the Ripper. Supposedly, the memoirs of the guy himself."
So, I bought it. Transpires that recently a huge manuscript was discovered, written by a guy claiming to have been Jack da Ripper. Seriously. Would I lie to you? *sniggers*
Written by a guy by the name of James Carnac, it details his childhood, and goes on to explain his motives for the killings, then outlines the period when he killed them.
Now, I'm not a naive bastard. Neither am I stupid. But I've read about sixty pages of this book, so far, and what I can tell you is that it is bloody fascinating. I want to believe, but I'll never know. That's a killer, no?
As it says on the inside cover, it's up to us all to conclude whether it's the words of him, or not. At the back of the book, there are words from criminologists, that have read it, I'll say no more than that. Anyhow, I thought one or two of you might be interested in reading it. As I said, I've read about sixty pages so far, it's well worth a gander, very very interesting. Just checked, Amazon have it...
