I am the head of my vessel, of course, that much is undisputed...however I am not a "Captain". Am I therefore ,a Commandress? or is there a better, more fitting title for a female captain? Oh Yes....and the sun will set for YOU.

no sorry hun ... on ship the captains title is actually ships Master there never was ships Mistress because at the time women were for having babies and it was unlucky to have a woman who wasnt a virgin ( stops you taking her virginity) onboard
well big ships anyway ...if you have a small boat its usually skipper... say fishing boat to small coaster ..then you move on to Master chaos mayhem and desaster......my work here is done

As far as I know in English ranks are asexual. If we have Commandress we will have sergentrix, corporaleuse. Any way in naval ranks a Captain outranks a Commander/ress so you have demoted yourself.

Number one and four striper are both terms used in the navy for the captain. Four striper refers to gold braid on the arm but I am sure you could give more interesting stripes

Captain is not gender specific, we have all been educated or should that be conditioned to think that Captains are or should be men. Don't start me on this, Oh you didn't! The world would be a better place if Women held the reigns Reigning LUXE Sadoquiz champion

Captains can be female. I thought this would be a thread about the Italian Capitain the pretty young blonde Moldovan both of whom managed to get to boats with possessions, lap tops and like, something the passengers did not.

There have been Russian ship captains for many years....and "Number One"=First Lieutenant. "Captain"is a designation for the one in charge, whatever the actual rank -so the skipper of a trawler,a dinghy, battleship or an aircraft is the Captain. You could be slightly exotic and think French - Capitaine! It derives from the Latin Caput=head. Having said that,"Commandress" is an interesting addition to the etymology. But if Captain is good enough for Catherine Janeway(USS Voyager) I guess it is good enough for anyone. Let not the sun go down upon your wrath, but remember, things are not what they seem, neither are they otherwise.

So all the prostitutes that swarmed on sailing ships when they docked were men?? The slate ships that sailed out of Welsh ports in the 19th century were often crewed by a whole family including mothers and daughters. The slavers that sailed out of West Africa did not have any problem carrying women. No women passengers?? I suspect the whole thing about women on sailing ships is probably some literary of film convention that has passed in to urban myth. Granted women were not allowed to crew Royal navel vessels until recently.
