Background: This is a presentation given at Defcon18 by a hacker that had his computer stolen. Here's how he was able to track it down.

I was just about to do something when I saw your link. Whatever it was, I'm sure it wasn't important!

Very entertaining in a truly geeky way.

I've seen it before, but it was worth another 20 minutes of my life to watch it again. On the surface, it's a heart-warming story of technology enabling the bad guy to get what's coming to him, though I thought about it a bit deeper, and a couple of things bugged me.

First was the unspoken but obvious assumption that the guy identified as the user of the computer was the same guy that climbed in through the second floor window and stole it. The fact that it took two years to turn up on-line again, and there being no mention of the other stolen equipment (the backup drives) suggests to me that the computer has changed hands at least once since the theft. This is possibly someone who naively bought the computer in good faith, knowing that it was second hand but not that it was stolen. More likely, he knew and didn't care that it had a dubious history as long as that was reflected in the price. Yes, that's criminal in itself, but not to the same degree as actual housebreaking, which is what he's accused of.

Secondly, I felt really sorry for the 'big ass' women, whose identities were splashed all over the big screen (and now YouTube) too. This video has gone viral, and could well have caused embarrassment for some of those shown. If the guy had been trawling around IC or FetLife and those had been our pictures, would we have been so happy to see them paraded on there?

So I have to say that the whole thing leaves me with very mixed feelings. It's a good story, but it could have been handled more sensitively.

I saw it the other day, was waiting to see what the result of the police side of things were, and if he was guilty of anything like actually robbing the computer or just receiving stolen goods. But alas no info on that side of things so while I enjoyed the technical side of things, the shaming of the guy and the woman who was daft enough to contact him was a bit poor.

Can you tell I'm bored and have nothing better to do with my life?
Well nothing more important to do.
Well nothing I can be bothered doing to do.
And you get to suffer my writings because of it.
