I hadn't heard about Peacocks. Bad news.

A journo told me years ago that they have to find out how many Brits died to make a story relevant but if there are no Brits then it drops down the "newsworthy" list. Times change I suppose.

Mean while Peacocks have gone bust and we lose all those jobs and another high street retailer oh and the jobless figures increase.........

But its ok cos there were no British who died on the ship.....

Yes I know people have died but having it as the top story on every news channel when there is no more news apart from it shifting is pushing it a bit......

Tis a sad time I am still gutted over losing Ethel Austin and TJs...........

Will stop my rant now lol xxx

To be blunt, everything but the day's Eurozone bond yields is irrelevant padding at the moment :(

eta - there is a real need for this type of reporting.

Absolutely there is. It just isn't a need of the kind that deserves to be satisfied.

TJ's are still going, was in there yesterday getting more kitchen bits.

Can you tell I'm bored and have nothing better to do with my life?
Well nothing more important to do.
Well nothing I can be bothered doing to do.
And you get to suffer my writings because of it.

I don't see anything wrong with putting the deaths into a human or emotional context, as opposed to leaving them as cold statistical facts. We're hardened enough as it is, really.

"Embellishment" is a different matter; that is adding to the known facts to make the story more interesting. But from what I have read, this was what his fellow band member said happened. The media can only report what witnesses say, so if it's untrue then the band member was embellishing the story, not the media. I think it's unlikely he would make it up though.

B B King once famously went back into a burning building to retrieve his favourite guitar. He named it Lucille, he said, to remind him "not to do something so stupid again". Point is, the story is believable enough.

Nobody is obliged to feel sad for the deaths of people they've never met. I can't say I cried about it either. But on the other hand I don't want to try to pretend that nobody else genuinely feels it sad, to make up for my own cold-heartedness. That would be a kind of double-humbug.

To be truthful, the person I feel saddest for is the captain. Probably because he, and his story, are what feel most real about something which is otherwise quite remote.

What was that film with Humph Bogart in as Captain Queeg cracking up and facing a mutiny..? Anyway, a bit like that.

Edit: 'The Caine Mutiny', that was it.
