Isn't that a totally different issue to people choosing not to take work?

One of the principal cost in the benefits system is housing benefit. And housing benefit is paid directly to landlords. So the notion that people are living it up on cash-in-hand benefits is dubious at best. Of course any government could sharply reduce housing benefit costs by building more social housing, thus moving claimants out of private rental properties (while having the added benefit of providing a great deal of paid employment) Incidentally most benefits fraud depts. spend a great deal of their time investigating landlords who are defrauding the housing benefits system. Individually they tend to be causing more costs than the folks getting an extra £35 per week defrauding the disability allowance. Some figures here: Note that family tax credits are not only means tested but were sharply reduced in April 2011 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-11466178 | ||||||

Its rather interesting that no one grumbles about child tax credits despite it being the most costly and available to people earning up to 40k

Housing benifit. The idea is to cut out the landlord and make the tenents shop around for cheaper places to live.Personally I doubt it will work as experiment for changing the system. http://empressm7.uboot.com/ http://www.socialkink.com/empressmartine Vampire, pro/lifestyle ts dom/switch.Ageplay mummy/aunty/AB,medical play, domestic, energy, outdoor specialist."Who you calling"@?!;:$£<Σ#"!" Lies, damned lies and statistics. With regards to the question of how many dole scum, never worked households there are in the UK. We could of course turn to The National Office of Statistics, in fact these very reports http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/publications/re-refere... Where we would discover that there are about 40Million working adults in the UK and about 297,000 living in households that have never worked. Is that an epidemic? It's merely 0.007% of the population. Certainly it's a lot individuals and we should certainly attempt to address it but it's hardly a widespread problem that's sweeping the nation. Also with regards the earlier question about "Does the government know the real statistics?" about who is in or out of work or seeking work or whatever. I'm pretty sure you can dig those numbers out of the NAO site too. |
