Do you think I work for the D.W.P?

Does the government know the real statistics?

There is plenty of anecdotal evidence, plus dedicated teams to investigate benefits cheats in both the DWP and local authorites.

In addition, we are exposed to a plethora of government advertisements on national TV and billboards to encourage the "grassing up" of benefits cheats including anonymous phone lines.

Perhaps it's all P.R and it doesn't happen at all, you think?

Isn't that a totally different issue to people choosing not to take work?

Exactly so. If I get a job within this tax year, I will receive a P45 and my tax contributions will be assessed according to how often I've paid tax this year.

Oh, okay. So it counts towards your income allowed before tax - but isn't in and of itself taxed until you get past that threshold (presumably by getting a job or with investment income).

Makes sense. Ta.

From the HMRC website:

Jobseeker's allowance (JSA) is taxable regardless of whether someone is entitled to contribution based JSA or income based JSA. There are special rules for deciding how much of the JSA someone receives is taxable.

The amount of JSA that is taxable is the lower of:

>the amount the person receives and >the taxable maximum.

The amount of the taxable maximum depends on whether someone is claiming as a single person or as a couple.

As I said: JSA is taxable income: we are all paying for each other!

I'm confused. If you get JSA, that's £3510 a year.

The personal allowance for income before tax is currently £7475.

So I don't see how people on JSA pay tax? Can you explain?

Assuming that there is a job availabe and you were successful in interview. This means the human element can effect the outcome of what happens when you apply for a job.

That obviously shut some people up.

I'm sure their ire is mainly reserved for those who don't earn enough in a year to fall into paying tax (i.e. nothing), than those for whom part of their taxable earnings are JSA.

Or there's nothing in your post to get combative/cock-wavy about.

One of the two.

One of the principal cost in the benefits system is housing benefit. And housing benefit is paid directly to landlords. So the notion that people are living it up on cash-in-hand benefits is dubious at best. Of course any government could sharply reduce housing benefit costs by building more social housing, thus moving claimants out of private rental properties (while having the added benefit of providing a great deal of paid employment)

Incidentally most benefits fraud depts. spend a great deal of their time investigating landlords who are defrauding the housing benefits system. Individually they tend to be causing more costs than the folks getting an extra £35 per week defrauding the disability allowance.

Some figures here: Note that family tax credits are not only means tested but were sharply reduced in April 2011 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-11466178

Its rather interesting that no one grumbles about child tax credits despite it being the most costly and available to people earning up to 40k ;-)

Housing benifit. The idea is to cut out the landlord and make the tenents shop around for cheaper places to live.Personally I doubt it will work as experiment for changing the system.

Lies, damned lies and statistics. With regards to the question of how many dole scum, never worked households there are in the UK. We could of course turn to The National Office of Statistics, in fact these very reports

http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/publications/re-refere...

Where we would discover that there are about 40Million working adults in the UK and about 297,000 living in households that have never worked. Is that an epidemic? It's merely 0.007% of the population. Certainly it's a lot individuals and we should certainly attempt to address it but it's hardly a widespread problem that's sweeping the nation.

Also with regards the earlier question about "Does the government know the real statistics?" about who is in or out of work or seeking work or whatever. I'm pretty sure you can dig those numbers out of the NAO site too.
