Film Spoiler Warning
"Shame" is about a brother and sister both dysfunctional in relation to where sex fits into the broader picture of their emotional lives. Brandon's obsessive sexual needs are met through pornography, prostitution and one night stands where he avoids all risk of connecting emotionally with anyone. When he takes to bed a colleague who does reach out to him on an emotional level, he is rendered impotent, shuts down and immediately shuts her out. Sister Sissy, is the flip side of the same coin and repeatedly, fruitlessly uses sexual promiscuity in a quest to gain the emotional connection that she craves but never quite attains. Sissy leaves a message on Brandon's answer machine that goes unanswered, "Were not bad people, we've just come from a bad place" and thus reveals to us how a shared dark past has left them both scarred. Can they heal or is some emotional damage just too deep?
A great movie dealing with difficult issues in a very credible and thoughtful way.
