When does "Public Awareness" become too much? (42)

This post is on the SM/Bondage/Fetish web board.

The SM Pride marches have done a lot to bring 'Alternative Sexuality' out of the Dark Ages and more accepted into public mainstream.

But where should the line be drawn?

Boots has been criticised by parents for selling sex toys in its shops, within full view of children. Families said they were 'shocked' and 'disgusted' that the sex aids were on show, removed from packaging. Beneath each of the unpackaged sex toys on display was a card detailing the toys' features. Children passing the display were able to read intimate details of how the product could be used. By contrast, the Ann Summers sex-shop chain serves boxed sex aids only to those aged 18 or over in designated separate sections of its stores.

this is great, boots is not seen as a sex shop and have their products as sexual well being. I say well done for them, sex is constantly being condemned as a bad thing and by doing censorship you don't help anyone.

They can see FAR worse things on a quick google search.

The Boots thing is about mainstream sexuality. Not alternative sexuality.

But it does show, IMO, a more relaxed, healthier attitude to sex in general.

The Daily Mail, a self-proclaimed 'family newspaper', has been criticised for showing Boots' sex toys in its pages, within full view of children. Daily Mail readers are no doubt 'shocked' and 'disgusted' that the sex aids were on show in the newspaper, removed from packaging.

Shall we try to resist the fashionable temptation to "shoot the messenger" and slag the Daily Mail off? Because I can use the article from another source if you prefer.

Boots selling sexual aids has nothing to do with public awareness of BDSM. I can't imagine why the daily wail has chosen to pick this up like its current news, boots started selling vibrators and things years back, there mainstream controversy and then everyone forgot about it as far as I remember. I think the idea behind it was to sell a tasteful sexual enhancer aimed at women which could be purchased from a mainstream shop as many women don't feel comfortable in adult stores. I have to wonder, these children that are supposed to be traumatised by the graphic descriptions of sexual activity on the packaging- why are they running around a pharmacy unsupervised by the parents that care so much about their little darlings well being that they don't want them knowing about sex?

its funny we talk about 'protecting children' from sexaul imagery,,

in a natural envioment where children knows what go's on and why ( i,m talking nilla stuff ) should they need protecting from it,,

because otherwise what adults do would seem normal and not so oooh top shelf back of the closet ! very very secrect !!

we as adult's are frankly fucking thick as arseholes when it come's to our kid's,,

we teach them a steam load of lie's,, santa, easter bunny, god, things under the bed, etc as being real,,

expose them to mindless graffic violence from a very ealy age,, yet

when it come's to Real Normal stuff our choice is to keep them entirly in the dark 'until they come of an age'

its no wonder theres so many kinky buggers in the world,, really i mean really !!

Please excuse crap spelling cause i,m rubbish

The Netmums News Team was criticised for ignoring their own rules ("anything we write on here needs to be suitable for a child") by linking to a Daily Mail story which shows Boots' sex toys in its pages, within full view of children. Netmums members are no doubt 'shocked' and 'disgusted' that the sex aids were on show in the link, removed from packaging.

Let's shoot the hypocritical news organisations (eg the Daily Mail and Netmums) that stoke up moral panics to increase their circulation. You can tell their outrage is artificial because they publish exactly the material they object to (images of the dildos etc) where the people they are supposedly protecting (children) can see it.

You shouldn't fall for this stuff.

That's just a link to a forum which discuses (and links to) the Daily Mail article.

They seem to be slagging it off as well.
