Two blogs in one day, oh my.

CAMBRIDGE MADE ME AN OFFER. Now, it's an offer that also involves learning Latin to an A Level standard by August 15th (from scratch, and they know I've never done it before) BUT IT'S STILL AN OFFER.

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD!!!

*dance dance dance*

Those of you on my twitter will already have seen the news, but I need to share it in every possible medium because I live in a very small flat - there's very limited room for actually jumping up and down squealing. I have to do it on the internet instead!

:D :D :D

P.s. tried to think of something witty to say in latin but mine is... errr... rusty.... will caveat emptor do? :-D

There's a somebody I'm longing to see, I hope that he turns out to be, someone to watch over me

Well done you!

In a cross between boasting and making myself feel about 107, I can report that my son has a similar offer from Oxford, except that they are obviously dumbing down way more than Cambridge as he can do the Latin ab initio.

Thank you, and congratulations for your son!

I had no idea that Latin was a requirement for my course. I've double checked the prospectus and it doesn't say anywhere that it's part of it. I've been chatting to someone else who applied to the same course and they didn't realise either. Totally stunned when I read that was one of the conditions of the offer, no idea how it's going to be tested or verified that I have achieved the right level, we'll see what happens!

I've been chatting to someone else who applied to the same course (which I realise I haven't mentioned, is Anglo Saxon Norse and Celtic) and they didn't realise either. I presume that your studies will be taking you up to the Conquest in 1066? If so a lot of the Educated up until that point used a grammatical system similar to that of Latin and from that point a large amount of Latin was brought to England through the Normans. There are approximately three influxes of Latin to England, period one was before the Anglos arrival, period two was during with the conversion to Christianity and three was with the Normans.

The need to study Latin is a precursor to being able to read a lot of the primary and secondary sources for your course I'd imagine. I'll dig out the sites that may be of use and a bibliography for you of texts and books that are good for practice and references if you would like?
