Just something I posted about on FL yesterday.
Why do people pronounce Domme as Dom-may? Do they think it sounds French? If so they are wrong and Domme and Dom would be pronounced the same, as Dom.
It is pretentious and ghastly.
Anyone like being called Dom-may?
Anyone ever noticed how it is used by some Dominant men to take the piss out of dominant women in a sneaky way?
I am going to stop referring to myself as Domme as I don't like its gender specificity when the word 'Dom' or 'Dominant' works just as well.

I've heard it used by both men and women, both doms and subs. It grates. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Edited 30 Dec 11, 11:13 PM by Rhoobarb

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominatrix The term "domme" is a coined pseudo-French female variation of the slang dom (short for dominant). It stems from the Latin words "dominus" = master, "domina" = mistress. The pronunciation is identical to the term "dom", by analogy to one-syllable French-derived words like femme or blonde. Domme is pronounced Dom. Just like other words based on French to show gender would be, exactly the same as the masculine version. Dominant partner in an FLR with @paulss

That's how I would pronounce it from seeing it written down. That is the way I always thought it should be pronounced. I also assume it is just a made up word, invented by people in the BDSM scene. How would you pronounce it and where does the word and it's "proper" pronunciation come from? Gary x. ETA Just saw reply with where it comes from. Not disagreeing, but it has been my experience that some less than illustrious male dominants pronounce it that way in a sarcastic and childish attempt to put female dominants down. Some male dominants, not all. Dominant partner in an FLR with @paulss

I've never heard anyone pronounce it Dom-may, and it hadn't occured to me that anyone would. It does seem a little odd.

Totally agree with the pronunciation - it's pronounced dom. Personally I don't see the need for gender specific titles at all I.e. host and hostess. Mind you I also dislike honourific capitalisation too, in my book dom only starts with a capital letter when it starts a sentence. Dave Be the change you want to see in the world. - Gandhi. |
