Computer backups (14)

Talking of backups (on an earlier member's weblog) I am currently contemplating the best system to use to back up my new (ish) computer.

It has a C drive of 739,755,683,840 bytes and a D drive of 740,037,750,784 bytes most of which I will fill up with photos and videos. I have been using CD's and DVD's and have a small external hard drive but I am really looking for a more robust and systematic solution?

depends how techie you want to be (not saying I am at forefront of all of it!)

I'd still go for external hard drive - getting reasonable in price now for decent memory

maybe you want one of those external drives with software on that make backing up more "one-click" - and can back up more stuff.

dont know good brands, I presume seagate would probably do one - but sure there are some forums on pcadvisor or whatever.

(I'm guessing you already know how to set windows restore points....which is always handy as well)

I'd agree. Well worth getting a decent external hard drive. I lost all my music and was totally gutted, I learnt the hard way.

You want at least a 1TB External USB hard drive, or you could go for several smaller ones.

Only problems I've had with external drives is the interfaces dying on me. But I could just take the hard drive out of the box and stick it in another one. And it doesn't stop you still backing up to DVD as well. And remember to store your backups away from the computer in case of fire or theft, less chance of losing the originals and backups at the same time.

Can you tell I'm bored and have nothing better to do with my life?
Well nothing more important to do.
Well nothing I can be bothered doing to do.
And you get to suffer my writings because of it.

I have all my music/movies/tv/photos/etc stored on one of these...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B002GAX2R0 and copied onto another one. I use syncback free software to keep the two drives in line ...

http://www.2brightsparks.com/freeware/index.html

I also have my music and photos on a spare 500gb drive and have another syncback profile set up for that.

You have an image, Like a good girl should, But you'd take it from its package, And you'd break it if you could.

I can recommend this place

cheap reliable and fast. I would also recommend the external hard drive route. Memory is less than £1 a gig now as a guidance for buying it.

Thanks for all your suggestion, I have found a 2Tb external hard drive at what I think is a reasonable price.

1 "Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 2TB Desktop USB 2.0 External Hard Drive with Capacity Gauge"

Personal Computers; £99.99

Actually I did lose some photos in August 2008 due to a delay in backing up and whilst they were not valuable they were still irreplaceable :(

Happiness is a warm bum :)

I use an external hard drive (which I see you've now purchased) and a free program called Areca to handle the backups. All I have to do is remember to plug the drive in and run the backup (although you can keep the drive plugged in 24/7 and set the backup as a scheduled task if you prefer).

Edited to add: that's actually a very good price for a 2Tb drive. I paid £50 or £60 for a 1Tb external drive earlier this year, but since then there has been a lot of flooding in Thailand which knocked out a couple of manufacturing plants, sending the price of hard drives through the roof. A 1Tb internal drive that was £36 back in June is now over £100....

Don't forget facilities like Skydrive and iCloud. Free online document and photo storage.

You can get USB 3 for just a few quid more (theoretically 10 times faster that USB 2).

Rather than twatting around like a demented boy scout why not just use gaffa tape to restrain the bitch? (stolen sig)
