Has anyone read 'The Story of The Eye' by Georges Bataille (writing as Lord Auch)? It's described as one of the erotic classics of the twentieth century yet I had never heard of it until this evening. Is it readable as a novel. I understand it's very surrealistic, and how does it rate for eroticism?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Story-Eye-Penguin-Modern... 'Product Description Bataille's first novel, published under the pseudonym 'Lord Auch', is still his most notorious work. In this explicit pornographic fantasy, the young male narrator and his lovers Simone and Marcelle embark on a sexual quest involving sadism, torture, orgies, madness and defilement, culminating in a final act of transgression. Shocking and sacreligious, Story of the Eye is the fullest expression of Bataille's obsession with the closeness of sex, violence and death. Yet it is also hallucinogenic in its power, and is one of the erotic classics of the twentieth century. ' -------------------

Yes, it's not bad for straightforward erotic content as well as pressing both kinky and sadistic buttons for me. As you mentioned, it is surreal. I recommend doing a little googling and getting some background on Georges Bataille before reading. If you like the novel, you can go back for more depth after. Best read in combination with 'Erotism'. Railing against the tyranny of 'common sense'.

Definitely erotic (imo) and an important, innovative work of literature (in a lot of people's opinion). It's also short and highly readable - so you can't lose really. The Penguin edition used to come bundled with a couple of essays (one by Barthes and the other by... (I forget)) which are also worth a read.

it pisses all over the story of O in my humble opinion.... first read it on a train between preston and crewe... (yes its that short) and had to run to the toilet at crewe station to masturbate. Its not actually that well written (or maybe loses in translation) but some of the concepts are hot as hell. Buy a copy of Beyond the Circle CAAN statement of principle.
