What Christmas Means to Me
Very little is what it means to me. A dull day, when everything is shut preceded by a load of hype that is dragged out for months. Yes, swapping presents is nice and I have a lovely dinner, but we could do that any day of the year. I get time off work, which is always good, but I would rather have it in the summer.
I am an atheist, so the very foundations of the day are meaningless to me. I think that the decorations and the rest of the hype are just irritating and even depressing. The phoney cheer that covers the great festival of greed and excess is so worn out from many years of over use.
I wish that Christmas would just fade away, as many traditions have over the years, but it is too much of a commercial success for that. So the great moneymaker that is Christmas is dragged out and rehashed for yet another year.
If you like Christmas, I hope you have a good one (Always better to have a good time than be miserable). For the rest of us, all we can do is make the most of it, as it'll soon be over, until next time anyway.
Gary.

I am with you on this one - I wish I could feel differently about it - but I just want the whole thing to be over and carry on as normal. And celebrate what is important to me... "Fear is that little darkroom where negatives are developed" Michael Pritchard

One of the things that irritate me about Christmas is the reaction from people who persist in wishing me a merry one in the shops etc. When I politely smile and say thank you but we celebrate the Solstice they either grimace, look shocked, ask what that is then look shocked. The worst one I've had in the past is to tell me that I am being mean to my littleun. It apparently to that person it didn't matter that it wasn't my faith I should celebrate it because of littleun missing out. Do wonder if they would have said that to someone from the more established non-Christian faiths! Those who do celebrate for the right reasons great, but those who don't and do all the manic hype I do wonder why they bother? lily

I hate Christmas too. Makes me laugh how people who slag off religion all seem to love Christmas, facebook is full of people's status's on how great it is full of baking and crap. That saying i'm looking forward to tomorrow as i'm spending it with really good scene friends.

I agree to an extent. I am not bothered about Christmas personally but people I care about enjoy it and so doing what I can to make the day / time good for them is important. This year we can't do the usual Christmas things but are doing as much as we can. And is it really a festival of greed ? I hear this quite a lot but although I am sure that most people spend more than usual, I don't really know anyone personally who goes over the top about it, though then again that is only my experience. Having said this, the most ridiculous thing I heard this year was a woman on the radio complaining about having little money and her kids would only get relatively small presents at Christmas and get their main presents (a long list of electronic gadgets and clothes) in the sales afterwards. "And do they understand ? How old are they?" "They try to do but its hard for them, they are 4 and 2" !!!

Ian I absolutely love your sense of humour Gary and dawn - I hope you enjoy your time off work and at least you have the Doctor Who Christmas Special to look forward to. That's the true meaning of Christmas isn't it? If you can't beat them - be beaten! |
