Disability Access at Venues (16)

This post is on the West London (W) topics page and the Munches web board.

Good disabled access is about much more than being wheelchair-friendly, although that's vital too.

I'm mobile so don't need ramps or wider doorways but I do need a disabled toilet, mainly because it has an alarm cord if I'm taken ill and need to call for help. Plus there's a big difference between having an attack in a more spacious toilet than a tiny standard cubicle - I'll sustain fewer injuries.

That said, disabled toilets are frequently of a poor standard. It's a real bugbear of mine. Too many are not clean enough, are smelly, lack a coat hook (do they think disabled people don't wear coats?), don't have decent colour contrast between the walls and the grab rails, lack enough grab rails, place the sanitary bins too far from the toilet, don't have a modesty curtain, or are used to store stuff (one I used was crammed with tins of paint and a floor polisher, another was full of kitchen paper rolls and other supplies).

And almost disabled loos will have the alarm cord tied up, often out of reach. The law says it must touch the floor. Usually cleaners come in, tie it out of the way to clean the floor then forget to untie it. Fat lot of use if you're lying on the floor unable to reach it...

The Kingston Munch is held in a wheelchair friendly pub.

It has sloped entrances and a lift.

I had a case at butlins of a Disabled unit that only had a hand rail on one side of the toilet. I was send to deal with the customer if was good training for me as since then I do look at items like would a Disabled user find this fit for the job and is it really fit for the job. I know of a building with a Disabled Loo but on the top floor but there was no way to get to the toilet but it was put there as it was done due to planning telling them they needed to have one in the building.

I find wetherspoons are very good as they are doing more then most.

Thank you Kingston Munch - yours is one that ive been recommending to him to attend so im really pleased you responded positively, hope to see you there in the new year!

I used to enjoy whipping, necrophilia and bestiality but then I realised I was flogging a dead horse.

The Docklands munch is fairly accessible - the room they usually hold it in also has the door to the disabled loo, there's a ramp available to get over the shallow steps into the venue, and it's on the DLR where every station except Bank has lifts and ramped access. The bar's a bit tall, but wheelchair users seem to get served okay so I guess that's not an impediment.

Unfortunately, the Geek Munch isn't accessible. I haven't been able to find a Bank-area venue that's accessible and doesn't charge an arm and a leg to hire. I'll keep my eyes open if we need to move again, though.
