What is it with cars and me?
Since I passed my driving test many moons ago, almost every car I have had has to be a bitch to me near xmas time.
2 years ago the engine blew up on me while I was on the M25 coming back from seeing my mum.
This year the fan belt went at the weekend and it is not as easy as the manual says it is to replace it.
The reason being 1 alternator mounting bolt is missing and the other one had snapped. No wonder the fan belt was squealing so much.
Now waiting for the mechanic I use to get back in touch with me so he can sort out the snapped bolt at least, the rest I can do myself.
Please Santa let me win a brand new car or win the lottery so I can buy a brand new car. Then I would (or should) have no problems for 3 years at least.
Rant over, my usual Mr Grumpy service will resume.

Well perhaps if you had the car regulary serviced especially a winter one may have prevented problems at this time of year ?! I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.

^^^ would the missing bolt have been discovered at a service? Never mind kinky, think of all the money you'll be saving not being able to get out there to spend it!
I'm loud and I'm vulgar, and I wear the pants in the house because somebody's got to, but I am not a monster. I'm not.

A squealing fan belt is usually a sign that something is wrong. I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.

Just had a new alternator fitted at a garage about 4 months ago, so should have been set properly. methinks they did it skewiff for me to go back again so they could get more money out of me. I put the squealing down to the damp cold weather and I was going to tighten the belt up a tad myself. There is a fine line between sanity and insanity. I have a foot firmly planted either side of that line

I do almost all of the work on my cars myself. ALL of the problems I have had with the cars over winter has been after other 'mechanics' have worked on them, or unexpected parts failure where they give no warning they are about to go kaput. There is a fine line between sanity and insanity. I have a foot firmly planted either side of that line

The 'missing' bolt was the one the last garage did not tighten properly after running the engine for 10 minutes (as I would have done as per manual's instructions), after fitting the alternator and tightening the belt to the correct tightness. Would much prefer a smaller car as I hate Jags. There is a fine line between sanity and insanity. I have a foot firmly planted either side of that line |
