Wow - they have published a statement saying that they expect not to survive for much longer.

What a shame - the end of a big brand and the worst possible timing for thousands of employees.

Well to be fair and to quote Mark Twane The reports of HMV's death seems to be greatly exaggerated

Reading the following article it states that they are continuing to restructure the business and refocus on what their core business is by offering more technology products, such as MP3 players, headphones and tablet computers, as well as live music and event ticketing.

Although they do say "The economic environment and trading circumstances create material uncertainties, which may cast significant doubt on the Group's ability to continue as a going concern in future,"

Seems that the talks with the banks are positive so as long as that continues.

With very few music / dvd media outlets on the high street since Woolworths and Virgin ect left the market it would be a shame for them to go too - however for CD's and DVD's they can be expensive in comparasion with Play.com ect

I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.

I get what you are saying - but the BBC was pretty categorical what the outcome would be x

Yeah, it's not quite as cut and dried as that. Yet.

This. It's a good place to shop in some ways, but some of the prices you see sometimes are amazing (in a bad way).

Yes if they can sell a CD or DVD at say tesco and the price be matched by other supermarkets, why historically has HMV not matched them or gone one better and become online also.

HMV is on-line. And they probably don't match prices due to the fact they don't sell the same quantity of goods that a supermarket does. Although that still doesn't explain their stupid prices where they will sell a DVD for £16.99 when you can buy it in a supermarket for £5. If they were selling for £6 or maybe £7 then fair enough, but the original RRP for a film that has been out for 10 years is stupid.

Can you tell I'm bored and have nothing better to do with my life?
Well nothing more important to do.
Well nothing I can be bothered doing to do.
And you get to suffer my writings because of it.

Yes,I went in a HMV not long back, I couldn't believe how much they were charging for albums that have been out for 30 years. I'm suprised they've lasted this long. I think people have just had enough of these shops ripping them off now.

It is a shame when people lose their jobs though.

I hope HMV does not crash like some of the other big retailers, but, the writings been on the wall for a long time. The crazy pricing policy has already been noted and have been doing it for years.

They have also been selling tat for a while, crap that no-one wants. They made an odd decision to buy out zavvi and music zone (now called fopp, odd name) when they went bump, zavvi had problems as they where supplied by the music arm of Woolworths. Woolworths had a fair dominance of music retailing many years ago, if the record companies where not able to put new release stock on there shelves, it was really bad for new artists.

The last independent record shop in my town which had been trading for thirty years shut down a few months back, I had happy teenage memories of buying records and tapes and meeting up with friends talking about the latest stuff on the shelves. Punks, mods & rockers had to be separated on many an occasion, those days are long gone, sadly, now it's a knock at the door from Royal Mail:(

So, perhaps in the future, if we want a chart CD or DVD you may have to buy it in the supermarket. According to the news article below HMV appear to be selling the live music and ticketing side of the business, presumably to prop up the shops, which appear doomed anyway.

I hope Fopp keeps going if HMV does go bump. It's a cracking little chain of shops.
