Most of these terms assume that all IC members use them in the same context and that everyone views different kinks in the same way.

Many members don't.

If it was for some kind of popularity competition, ie, a blog got 5500 'wanks' or that thread got 2 'spanks' what would it actually mean?

Would it encourage more contentious postings to elicit 'spanks' for those into being humiliated or bratting? That would involve me in non-consensual kink fulfillment as I don't do humiliation, punishment or disapproval as a kink.

Would popular posters be boosted to the dizzy heights of board celebrity if they had lots of 'wanks' next to their names or threads? Would it lead to an elite of super-wankers?

What about items of serious note such as Activism articles, bereavements and 'end of era' postings? I wouldn't want anyone wanking or spanking on some of the blogs and posts I've made as it would be highly inappropriate.

I like 'Share'. It has no negative or positive connotations regarding the thread content and is unambiguous whilst drawing attention to it.

Although, some sites have "karma" points which you can add to or take away from.

The problem though, is, as above, people would "dislike" a post both because a bereavement is not to "like", but also "dislike" a contentious or inflammatory post. The meanings are vastly different.

I like the hug button. Everyone needs hugs. For whatever reason! Oh, god, that sounds so fluffy. LOL

What's wrong with a green thumb up and a red thumb down icon like many of the newspaper comments pages have? Very simple and I think pretty effective in communicating general approval or disapproval of a post.

I think the instance of 'my sub has died' is a pretty random example and not very usual for IC. Catering to the extremities of the types of post is always going to be an impossible task I think. Cater to the majority and then let people actually write meaningful responses to the outliers.

'Pow' 'Hug' or 'Kudos' are my votes, in that order.
