I recently complained to the BBC about their use of the word 'orgy' to describe the Max Mosley's BDSM scene for which he was outed. It seems to me worth the effort to challenge the use of the word to describe BDSM activity. Here are my complaint and their response. What do you think? ---- Feels the use of the word 'orgy' is inappropriate. The article constantly refers to the event attended by Max Mosley as an 'orgy'. All the definition I can find for the word at least imply, if not state explicitly, that an orgy includes sexual intercourse between those attending. As far as I am aware Mr Mosley has not admitted any sexual intercourse with those present and no substantiated evidence has been presented to suggest that sexual intercourse of any sort took place. Therefore to call the event an 'orgy' is inaccurate, misleading and, in my view, offensive. BBC Online URL: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-15874015 Audience member: Mr Richard XXXX ---- Dear Mr XXXX, thank you for your email. We think the word "orgy" can be reasonably understood as a reference to group sexual activity which does not have to include intercourse, and therefore it was fair to use it in our reporting. Thank you for contacting the BBC, kind regards, BBC News website team. http://www.bbc.co.uk/complaints/handle-complaint/ "A leader leads by example, whether he intends to or not."

Yes, I dream of orgiastic gatherings of beautiful women doing sadistic things to me but realistically any kind of orgy is pretty few and far between these days. Happiness is a warm bum

Was that after the letter you sent complaining about using the phase "less prostitutes" when we all know it should be fewer prostitutes. I shall boldly go and split an infinitive now.

Well exactly. I could understand if it was a newspaper, but I get a bit upset when it's the BBC who are supposed to be balanced and sober in their approach. "A leader leads by example, whether he intends to or not."

From http://www.thefreedictionary.com/orgy - "A revel involving unrestrained indulgence, especially sexual activity.", "a wild gathering marked by promiscuous sexual activity, excessive drinking, etc.", "riotous merrymaking, especially with excessive indulgence in sex, alcohol, and drugs", "a wild gathering involving excessive drinking and promiscuity", "a wild party or celebration". The issue is not whether sex took place (indeed, the term can be used even more broadly than that) - the problem is the word implies recklessness, excessiveness and a lack of restraint.
