Please accept my appologies if someone else has mentioned this and I just missed it.
All of the advice so far is very sound on the legal position, but there may be another aspect to this that is worth considering.
It has happened to me (in reverse) when I turned up to book an hotel room on the night due to an un-planned overnight stay as a business meeting over-ran. The duty anager asked if I was intending to pay cash and when I asked why he said I could have a room at less than half price as they had had a cancellation. It could be that the person in question is the problem here and not the hotel.
You might find that copying the owners (especially if they are a company) will get this matter resolved as I think that there is a chance that the staff are defrauding their employer.

When you pay by cash some times they can give a better rate due to cost of taking Cards payments and having to wait for there payment unlike with cash they can use there and then. ( and yes maybe can go missing from tax man)it not always the case of someone on the fiddle as you still need to book in due to fire regs.
Some hotels ask for more money when you dont use say a booking agent. When I worked for Butlins it used to cost about £8 to let a room out for one night. so sometimes letting it out for £20 is worth them doing with a cash payment. Want good virgin sex? Once in a life time offer.

Those terms and conditions refer to the use of the website, not the room that you book through it, MrBoo.

But they are your agent if you break there rules the booking can be seen as void

As the OP said earlier in the thread

As for bookings.com, I didn't actually make my reservation through there, I called the hotel direct a few weeks back & booked it direct.

Your comments need to go to Managing Director or at least trip Tripadvisor. Maybe explain to MD in gentle terms that the power of the internet magnifys bad news which could mean lost trade due to adverse advertisement... |

Well in that case if they did not send some form of paperwork with there booking TOC they would have no legal powers to hold you to the booking unless they told you that there no right to transfer room and also told you there TOC on the phone. Want good virgin sex? Once in a life time offer.
