If you only need a roll or 2 pop to a big yellow warehouse or any selfstore place as they sell it for £8 or £10 for black

Wow, thank you everyone for your help! Loads of options to choose from.

I'm in Portsmouth this weekend and not far from the Big Yellow centre there so I think i'll give that a try.

Staples have a range of pallet wrap. May well be cheaper than Big Yellow. There is a branch in Portsmouth and probably others not too far away. http://www.staples.co.uk/SearchEngine-pallet+wrap

Additionally, have you considered befriending someoin who actually works in a warehouse, and can pick it up for free?

I work in this field and can probably (legally) get my hands on a roll of clear without cost!!!!

They also do it in black or blue, which is used to hide the markings on the boxes.

Thats insanely expensive.

Big Yellow Storage sell 17u for a tenner (but only black/transparent), and ebay will get you about half of that.

It's not at all, it's priced per box, there are 6rolls/box

Sorry, quick safety note: pallet wrap is not required to conform to pthalate levels needed for food use, and should not be used for prolonged skin contact.
I always thought that food grade wrap was used in case of an allergic reaction. According to the following article, absorption through the skin is trivial compared to, say, accidental ingestion.

http://enhs.umn.edu/current/5103/phth/absorb.html

The main concerns of low doses seem to be abnormal foetal development, and possibly fertility issues in adults. If you're not currently pregnant and are not planning to conceive in the future, then I don't see much cause for concern.

I'm happy to be sensibly corrected. I don't mind being wrong, but I would like to understand.

Phthalates are not connected with allergic responses, but with various health effects linked to the hormonal and endocrine systems, including birth defects and breast cancer.

Phthalates are actually commonplace, and the issue is more about burden: how much is accumulated from all the various sources.

But the important point here is about using products in ways they were not intended to be used and being aware of the potential problems of doing so. Phthalates are controlled in materials that are intended for skin contact, but not in products which are not. If you are to play responsibly you need awareness of the risks involved, otherwise you are not playing either SCC or even RISK.

As far as I can tell, the risks are low, but can be avoided by using food grade material, therefore awareness is established and the risk should be compared with the submissive's risk profile.

Thank you for that explanation, and I certainly think it's useful that you have provided this information so that people can make their own informed judgements.

Having been born with hypospadias, I find this subject particularly interesting and I can certainly respect the desire to minimise exposure for those who are pregnant or likely to conceive at a later date. At the same time, as someone who's had the bullets taken out of the gun (one's proven to be plenty thus far) the fertility side and foetal development implications are not really issues for us.

I've done a bit of digging, and it seems that, while regulated, these substances are still present in perfumes and other substances that are intended for skin contact. Perhaps there are higher concentrations in pallet wrap, though I'd have thought that they'd be more likely to be absorbed from a liquid fragrance. As ingestion is a much more likely contamination route, I can see why there's tighter control on food and food handling products.

Ultimately, I've made my risk aware choice, and adverse allergic reactions aside, I'll use non food grade pallet wrap on myself and anyone else who's happy to let me do so, though I will pass on these concerns first. As I see it, there are lots of ways to die, and I strongly suspect that something else will get to me first.
