Does anyone know anything really reliable about manacles used to restrain prisoners in Medieval gaols? About how they were really fitted? Because I'm faced with the idea of a blacksmith hammering a piece of very hot metal round a human limb and, given that the human is going to struggle like mad, I just don't believe it. Basic padlocks have been around for centuries. Apart from that. Hinged manacles can be rivited cold, no heat required!

That doesn't sound likely to me. From museum pieces I've seen, they appeared generally to be a U shape in metal, with either a pin through, or a bar that screws down. or hinges. they had hinges. hinges are really old.

This is a very interesting book. Yes, a mixture of cold hammering, hot rivets, and padlocks for both medieval and Roman periods. :T: www.tanos.org.uk Edited 4 Dec 11, 4:21 PM by Tanos | |

I was interested in this thread, so had a wee look online. Wikipedia, and a few other places talk about cup lock shackles, that have no lock, and also puzzle lock shackles. Although from the little I have seen online of these puzzle lock shackles, it appears that only one shackle is 'puzzle' locked, the other shackle seems to be padlocked... As someone said up there^, padlocks have been around for since at least Roman times. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legcuffs

Some markkingdom videos from YouTube showing hammering shut and then removing Thai restraints with soft rivets:
These last ones are more medieval looking and you don't see them removed:
